The largest undercover force the world has ever known is the one created by the Pentagon over the past decade. Some 60,000 people now belong to this secret army, many working under masked identities and in low profile, all part of a broad program called “signature reduction.”
For the past decade, the United States Pentagon has been busy creating the world’s largest undercover covert action force that has 60,000 soldiers who lurk in the shadows to carry out missions you’ll never hear about. If you are a fan of streaming television, then you know that the government has created the ultra-dangerous B613 from the show ‘Scandal’, but only on a scale that is literally beyond comprehension. In an excellent example of ironic coincidence, this is what Obama called for back in 2008.
“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,” Barack Obama July 2, 2008.
I don’t know about you, but knowing an organization like this exists is not a source of comfort for me, no, this is the stuff that inhabits dystopian dreams and brings night sweats. When we watch the shenanigans and misdeeds of the government employees we do know about, and are shocked to the core at the evil they produce, just imagine what’s happening under cover of darkness with a group that is accountable to no one, and has all the money and power necessary to plan carry out their deepest, and darkest, power-mad fantasies.

FROM NEWSWEEK: The force, more than ten times the size of the clandestine elements of the CIA, carries out domestic and foreign assignments, both in military uniforms and under civilian cover, in real life and online, sometimes hiding in private businesses and consultancies, some of them household name companies.
The unprecedented shift has placed an ever greater number of soldiers, civilians, and contractors working under false identities, partly as a natural result in the growth of secret special forces but also as an intentional response to the challenges of traveling and operating in an increasingly transparent world. The explosion of Pentagon cyber warfare, moreover, has led to thousands of spies who carry out their day-to-day work in various made-up personas, the very type of nefarious operations the United States decries when Russian and Chinese spies do the same.
Newsweek’s exclusive report on this secret world is the result of a two-year investigation involving the examination of over 600 resumes and 1,000 job postings, dozens of Freedom of Information Act requests, and scores of interviews with participants and defense decision-makers. What emerges is a window into not just a little-known sector of the American military, but also a completely unregulated practice. No one knows the program’s total size, and the explosion of signature reduction has never been examined for its impact on military policies and culture. Congress has never held a hearing on the subject. And yet the military developing this gigantic clandestine force challenges U.S. laws, the Geneva Conventions, the code of military conduct and basic accountability.
The signature reduction effort engages some 130 private companies to administer the new clandestine world. Dozens of little known and secret government organizations support the program, doling out classified contracts and overseeing publicly unacknowledged operations. Altogether the companies pull in over $900 million annually to service the clandestine force—doing everything from creating false documentation and paying the bills (and taxes) of individuals operating under assumed names, to manufacturing disguises and other devices to thwart detection and identification, to building invisible devices to photograph and listen in on activity in the most remote corners of the Middle East and Africa.
Special operations forces constitute over half the entire signature reduction force, the shadow warriors who pursue terrorists in war zones from Pakistan to West Africa but also increasingly work in unacknowledged hot spots, including behind enemy lines in places like North Korea and Iran. Military intelligence specialists—collectors, counter-intelligence agents, even linguists—make up the second largest element: thousands deployed at any one time with some degree of “cover” to protect their true identities.
The newest and fastest growing group is the clandestine army that never leaves their keyboards. These are the cutting-edge cyber fighters and intelligence collectors who assume false personas online, employing “nonattribution” and “misattribution” techniques to hide the who and the where of their online presence while they search for high-value targets and collect what is called “publicly accessible information”—or even engage in campaigns to influence and manipulate social media. Hundreds work in and for the NSA, but over the past five years, every military intelligence and special operations unit has developed some kind of “web” operations cell that both collects intelligence and tends to the operational security of its very activities. US commandos from the Department of War stormed a Venezuelan oil tanker in a breathtaking airborne takedown amid ratcheting tensions in the Caribbean.
The breaking news that U.S. commandos stormed and seized a Venezuelan oil tanker is not simply another geopolitical dust-up — it is a visible sign of the times, a reminder that the world’s great powers are now moving pieces on the prophetic chessboard with increasing speed and intensity. When President Trump announced that U.S. forces had taken control of what he described as a “very large tanker” operating off the Venezuelan coast, the world caught a glimpse of something Washington hasn’t shown in decades: the willingness to use force decisively, swiftly, and without apology. And make no mistake, while the modern bureaucracy insists on calling it the “Department of Defense,” what you saw on full display was the Department of War, doing exactly what it was renamed from in 1949, projecting American power upon the seas. But where does all this lead, and more importantly, where does it all end?

FROM THE DAILY MAIL UK: Footage released by the Trump administration on Wednesday showed American forces swooping on the tanker in helicopters and rappelling down ropes. Troops with guns drawn darted up stairs to the bridge to take control of the vessel off the coast of Venezuela.
Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote in a statement on X: ‘Today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, and the United States Coast Guard, with support from the Department of War, executed a seizure warrant for a crude oil tanker used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.
‘For multiple years, the oil tanker has been sanctioned by the United States due to its involvement in an illicit oil shipping network supporting foreign terrorist organizations.’
The release of the video comes hours after it was reported on Wednesday that the tanker had been seized, sparking fears of a potential blockade and sending oil prices sky-rocketing. No name was given for the ‘stateless’ vessel, nor was it confirmed precisely where off the coast of Venezuela the raid unfolded.
Trump called it ‘the largest one ever seized’ and warned that ‘other things are happening.’
The capture sent oil prices climbing sharply, with Brent crude rising 1.21 percent to $62.69 a barrel amid fears the escalation could disrupt global supply. Venezuela is one of the largest suppliers of oil to China, which has been the destination of between 55 percent and 90 percent of the country’s oil exports.
A Bloomberg report called the move ‘a serious escalation’ after Trump demanded Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro step down. Caracas did not immediately respond to the seizure.
When asked about what the US will do with the oil seized from the Venezuelan tanker, Trump said, ‘We keep it.’
This week’s seizure marks the first time the Trump administration has moved to interfere with the country’s oil distribution amid the hostile pressure campaign. When a reporter on Wednesday asked Trump about who owns the seized oil tanker, the President responded, ‘You’ll get that information later.’ READ MORE
