The Arab League will apply to upgrade the Palestinians to full member status at the United Nations, according to a draft statement from a league meeting in Qatar on Thursday.
“It was decided to go to the United Nations to request the recognition of the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital and to move ahead and request a full membership,” said the communique, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.
The special meeting of the Arab League was requested by the Palestinian Authority late last month. The meeting was attended by PA President Mahmoud Abbas, who was expected to present league members with a comprehensive report of the plans to seek recognition of a Palestinian State at the United Nations in September.
In addition, the state of the peace process following Monday’s Quartet meeting was expected to be on the agenda for the meeting.
The Quartet meeting in Washington failed to result in what many expected would be a joint statement including a formula for getting back to peace talks. Israeli officials declined to discuss whether the reason for the failure to come out with a statement was not only because of gaps between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, but also differences among members of the Quartet themselves. The Quartet is made up of the US, EU, Russia and the UN. source – JPost
