World Economic Forum founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab will be stepping back from his role running the global gathering since he founded it in 1971.

There is perhaps no name more associated with these crazy times we live in than that of Klaus Schwab. With his thick German accent that always reminds you of a Nazi leader addressing the troops, Klaus Schwab has had a seemingly endless bag of tricks he has threatened us with for a great many years now. His trademark catch phrase of ‘you’ll own nothing and like it’ rolls off the tongue like a dusting of cricket flour as we watch 15-Minute Cities being constructed all around us. Is he really retiring? No, he is not, he’s just changing seats as the movie continues to play out.

The big question is who will take his place? We know that his daughter, Natalie Schwab, is fully onboard with the rising dystopia, and has threatened climate lockdowns many times. George Soros is being succeeded by his son Alex Soros, and we fully expect the evil machinations to continue unabated. Whoever replaces Klaus Schwab, you can rest assured his directives will be carried out. Whether you realize it or not, but our world is controlled by a very small handful of people who have the majority of the money, and they’ll continue working for their father right up to the end. It is, after all, a family business.

FROM SEMAFOR: Schwab announced his intentions in an email to staff on Tuesday that was shared with Semafor by a person connected to the organization. He will be stepping down as executive chairman and transitioning to a role as non-executive chairman, he said, adding the change in his role is pending approval by the Swiss government.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Forum said that the organization is “transforming from a convening platform to the leading global institution for public-private cooperation.” The Forum’s governance structure is set to change as a result of that evolution, the spokesperson said, and Schwab “will transition from Executive Chairman to Chairman of the Board of Trustees” by January 2025. Schwab has not named his successor, but said that over the last year, the group’s executive board, “under the leadership of President Børge Brende, has taken full executive responsibility.” Brende is a former Norwegian conservative leader.

Klaus Schwab, 86, is synonymous with the organization that he has managed for more than 50 years.

Initially known as the European Management Forum, early iterations of the event drew far fewer attendees to Davos than the thousands that now ascend to the Swiss mountain town. Now, the annual WEF meeting in Davos attracts dozens of high-ranking world leaders and CEOs each year, with more than 50 heads of state attending in 2024, according to the organization.

The Forum operates much like a family business, with Schwab’s children appointed to high-ranking positions and his wife Hilde heading the organization’s foundation and awards ceremonies in Davos.

In recent years, the Forum has shifted its focus towards the center, and away from liberal politics, Semafor previously reported. Succession at the WEF has been the subject of fevered speculation, and a Politico article floating possible names roiled the gathering in 2023. The Forum has also been navigating a difficult political landscape, and has steered back toward the center in recent years after embracing progressive directions in culture and finance.

The WEF, though a nonprofit, is a remarkable business: The organization brought in nearly $500 million in revenue in the year ending March 2023, and had a neat 200 million Swiss francs sitting in cash, Semafor reported last year. READ MORE

JPMorgan and Mastercard fully behind biometric payment options

FROM CNBC: Automated fast food restaurant CaliExpress by Flippy, in Pasadena, Calif., opened in January to considerable hype due to its robot burger makers, but the restaurant launched with another, less heralded innovation: the ability to pay for your meal with your face. CaliExpress uses a payment system from facial ID tech company PopID. To activate it, users register with a selfie. Then they can opt to be recognized and then PopID’s facial verification confirms the transaction.

Biometric payment options are becoming more common. Amazon introduced pay-by-palm technology in 2020, and while its cashier-less store experiment has faltered, it installed the tech in 500 of its Whole Foods stores last year. Mastercard, which is working with PopID,  launched a pilot for face-based payments in Brazil back in 2022, and it was deemed a success — 76% of pilot participants said they would recommend the technology to a friend. Late last year, Mastercard said it was teaming with NEC to bring its Biometric Checkout Program to the Asia-Pacific region.

“Our focus on biometrics as a secure way to verify identity, replacing the password with the person, is at the heart of our efforts in this area,” said Dennis Gamiello, executive vice president of identity products and innovation at Mastercard.

He added that based on positive feedback from the pilot and its research, the checkout technology will come to more new markets later this year.

As stores implement biometric technology for a variety of purposes, from payments to broader anti-theft systems, consumer blowback, and lawsuits, are rising. In March, an Illinois woman sued retailer Target for allegedly illegally collecting and storing her and other customers’ biometric data via facial recognition technology without their consent. Amazon and T-Mobile are also facing legal actions related to biometric technology.

In other countries, most notably China, biometric payment systems are comparatively mature, from visitors to McDonald’s in China being able to use facial recognition technology to pay for their orders, to systems offered by AliPay, which launched biometric payment as far back as 2015 and began testing the technology at KFC locations in China in 2018. A deal that PopID recently signed with JPMorgan is a sign of things to come in the U.S., said John Miller, PopID CEO, and what he thinks will be a “breakthrough” year for pay-by-face technology. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian have died after their helicopter crashed while crossing a mountain terrain in heavy fog on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan.

Ebrahim Raisi, 63, was the hard-liner protege of Iran’s supreme leader who helped oversee the mass executions of thousands in 1988. He was also known as the “butcher of Tehran”. He also led the country when it enriched uranium near weapons-grade levels and launched a major drone-and-missile attack on Israel. Now he is dead reportedly in a shocking helicopter crash yesterday, and Israel says they have nothing to do with it. Will this be the spark that ignites full-blown-regional war in the Middle East? That’s exactly what people are saying this morning.

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that the International Criminal Court intends to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of crimes against humanity for Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war, its Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan announced Monday, on the 227th day of the Gaza war. “Today, my Office seeks to charge two of those most responsible, Netanyahu and Gallant, both as co-perpetrators and as superiors pursuant to Articles 25 and 28 of the Rome Statute,” Khan stated.
