D.L. Moody was born on February 5th, 1837, in humble surroundings and grew to become the greatest evangelist this world has seen since the apostle Paul.

It has been 121 years since he went home to Heaven, but the legacy that D.L. Moody left behind continues to bear untold fruit for the Kingdom of God

Well I remember when I got saved back in 1991, plucked out of the fire of Hollywood and wonderfully put into the Body of Christ as a born again believer in Jesus. Shortly after that, someone placed in my hands a book about the life of a 19th century evangelist named D.L Moody, and what I read filled me with a passion for lost souls and would be the inspiration for my new-found Christian life. So much so that even this ministry which the Lord gave me, Now The End Begins, is bearing fruit that will be applied to Moody’s account at the Judgment Seat.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5,6 (KJB)

D.L. Moody was a man born into poverty and hardship, was schooled only until the 6th grade, saved at 19 years old, entered full-time Christian service at 23, and would go on to be the greatest evangelist of the 19th century, and perhaps since the apostle Paul. He didn’t do it perfectly, received a fair amount of criticism in his day, and was in the unenviable position of having learn the Bible while preaching it. Yet towards the end of his life, he has this to say about his impending death:

Some day you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody, of East Northfield, is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now, I shall have gone up higher, that is all; out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal — a body that death cannot touch; that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like His glorious body. I was born of the flesh in 1837. I was born of the Spirit in 1856. That which is born of the flesh may die, that which is born of the Spirit will live forever.

Is that your testimony? It was Moody’s, and in the process of his preaching and teaching the Bible all across America and Europe, God used him to lead millions to the Lord Jesus Christ and hundred of thousands to become preachers, bible teachers, pastors and evangelists.

One of my favorite anecdotes about Moody revolves around the time he met with Scottish revivalist Henry Varley in 1873, and the two were having a conversation about the current state of the preaching campaign. During that private talk, Varley casually said to Moody that “The world has yet to see what God can do with and for and through and in a man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him”. This was Moody’s take on that event when asked about it years later:

“Ah,” said Mr. Moody, “those were the words sent to my soul, through you, from the Living God. As I crossed the wide Atlantic, the boards of the deck of the vessel were engraved with them, and when I reached Chicago, the very paving stones seemed marked with ‘Moody, the world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to him.’ Under the power of those words I have come back to England, and I felt that I must not let more time pass until I let you know how God had used your words to my inmost soul.”

Those words were sent to my soul, as a baby Christian in 1991, and continues to propel and inspire me to this day. Perhaps the biggest lesson we learn from the faithful life of D.L. Moody is that when we obey God and follow Him in service, what we do will work to lead and inspire others as well.

Here now we present to you a wonderful snapshot of the life and labor of D.L. Moody, enjoy!

Salvation

At Mt. Vernon Moody became part of the Sunday school class taught by Edward Kimball. On April 21, 1855, Kimball visited the Holton Shoe Store, found Moody in a stockroom, and there spoke to him of the love of Christ. Shortly thereafter, Moody accepted the love of God and devoted his life to serving Him. The following year brought Moody to Chicago with dreams of making his fortune in the shoe business. As he achieved success in selling shoes, Moody grew interested in providing a Sunday School class for Chicago’s children and the local Young Men’s Christian Association.

YMCA

During the revival of 1857 and 1858, Moody became more involved at the YMCA, performing janitorial jobs for the organization and serving wherever they needed him. In 1860 when he left the business world, he continued to increase his time spent serving the organization. In the YMCA’s 1861–1862 annual report, Moody was praised for all his efforts. Although they could not pay him, the YMCA recommended he stay “employed” as city missionary.

Moody’s Sunday School

Meanwhile, Moody’s Mission Sunday School flourished, and it was different. Moody’s desire was to reach the lost youth of the city: the children with little to no education, less than ideal family situations, and poor economic circumstances. Soon the Sunday School outgrew the converted saloon used as a meeting hall. As the classes grew, associates encouraged Moody to begin his own church. Eventually, on February 28, 1864, the Illinois Street Church (now The Moody Church) opened in its own building with Moody as pastor.

The Civil War

As the political landscape of the United States changed in the 1860s, Moody’s connection with the YMCA proved a useful tool in his ministry. With the Civil War approaching, the Union Army mobilized volunteer soldiers across the north. Camp Douglas was established outside of Chicago, which Moody saw as a great evangelistic opportunity. Along with a few others, Moody created the Committee on Devotional Meetings to minister to the troops stationed at Camp Douglas, the 72nd Illinois Volunteer Regiment. This was just the beginning of Moody’s Civil War outreach. From 1861 to 1865, he ministered on battlefields and throughout the city, state and country to thousands of soldiers, both Union and Confederate. All the while, he maintained the Mission Sunday School.

Moody Gets Married

While ministering in Chicago, Moody and his wife met a woman named Emma Dryer, a successful teacher and administrator. Moody was impressed with her zeal for ministry and her educational background. He knew that women had a unique ability to evangelize to mothers and children in a way that men never could, and saw Dryer as just the person to help him encourage this group. Moody asked Dryer to oversee a ministry specifically to train women for evangelistic outreach and missionary work. Under Dryer’s leadership, the training program grew rapidly, and so did her desire for this ministry to reach men as well as women. She continued to pray that the Lord would place the idea for such a school on Moody’s heart.

Heartache In The Chicago Fire

On Sunday, October 8, 1871, as Moody came to the end of his sermon for the evening, the city fire bell began to ring. At first, no one thought much about it, as these city bells often rung. However, this night was different—it was the beginning of the Great Chicago Fire. Moody’s first concern was for his family, locating them and making sure they were somewhere safe. After securing his family’s safety, Moody and his wife stayed on the north side of the city to help other residents. The fire finally burned out Tuesday afternoon, after consuming much of what Moody had built.

This was a poignant time in Moody’s life and the fire forced him to reevaluate his ministry. It was during this time of evaluation he realized he needed to heed the Lord’s call on his life. For years, he had been moving forward and then asking God to support his plans. He knew from this point on, his call was to preach the Word of God to the world.

Revival!

In June 1872 Moody made his first trip to the United Kingdom. While he was there a few close contacts urged him to come back in a year. In June 1873, Moody and his family, and his good friend and musician Ira Sankey with his wife all traveled from New York to Liverpool, England. Moody and Sankey traveled throughout the UK and Ireland holding meetings, helping fuel the revival that was slowly sweeping the region. Moody’s visit made a lasting impression, and inspired lay people across the region to begin children’s ministries and ministry training schools for women.

Moody was revolutionary in his evangelistic approach. Despite conflicting counsel from friends and trusted contacts, he and Sankey traveled to Ireland during a time when Catholics and Protestants were constantly at odds with each other. Moody was different: he did not care what denomination a person claimed, but just wanted the message of Christ to be heard. As a result, the revival swept into Ireland, and he won praises of both Catholics and Protestants.

After two years overseas, the Moody family finally returned to the United States. They settled in Northfield, where Moody was born and raised, and he began to plan his next round of evangelistic city campaigns. From October 1875 to May 1876, Moody and three other evangelists toured through the major cities of the Midwest and Atlantic coast, preaching the message of salvation. Moody would embark on yet another city campaign before the desire to train young Christian workers would grip him again.

Moody’s Schools

Moody was on the cutting edge of ministry, and in 1879, Moody opened the Northfield Seminary for Young Women to provide young women the opportunity to gain an education. Not long after, Moody created the Mount Hermon School for Boys with the same goal as the girls’ school: to educate the poor and minorities. Moody had an amazing ability to bridge the gap between denominations, which was apparent in the diverse religious backgrounds of the school’s students.

In 1886 Dryer’s prayers were answered and the Chicago Evangelization Society (today, Moody Bible Institute) was founded. Moody had been focused on ministry near his home in Northfield but he came out to Chicago to help raise money for the Society, support Dryer, and see his dream become a reality. The Chicago Evangelization Society had been Moody’s vision but really came to fruition because of Dryer’s hard work. See History of Moody Bible Institute.

That same year, Moody assembled a large group of college students at Mount Hermon for the first “College Students’ Summer School.” This conference would birth the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions. By 1911 it was estimated that 5,000 student volunteers from America alone had come out of the program. Moody’s vision for the mission movement grew as it spread around the world to Europe and South Africa.

What Started As One Mother’s Plea For Her Two Incarcerated Sons Has Become An Open Door To Put King James Bibles Into The Hands Of Many Other Inmates

A mother contacted us today through our Bibles Behind Bars program with a heartfelt request for King James Bibles to be sent to her two sons incarcerated at Mid-State Correctional Facility, but the Lord had a much bigger plan in mind. What began as one mother refusing to give up on her boys has now opened the door for many more inmates at that facility to receive the word of God as well. What a timely reminder that when someone steps out in faith, the Lord can take that one act of obedience and multiply it into a blessing that reaches far beyond the original request! Loaves and fishes, anyone?

“When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.” Mark 8:19 (KJB)

After we got the request, I got on the phone with Chaplain Ellis at Mid-State Correctional, confirmed the woman’s two sons (name withheld) as being incarcerated there, and he told me that Mid-State holds a little over 1,500 inmates. I told him we could send him a bunch more than just the two Bibles, at no charge, and he was genuinely surprised and quite grateful for the offer, which he immediately took me up on. What started out as one mother with a burden for her sons to have God’s preserved word is now turning into an open floodgate of witness and ministry. This is why Bibles Behind Bars matters so much, because we are not merely sending books into prisons, we are sending the living word of God into places filled with darkness, regret, and brokenness. Inmates are getting saved, over 1,000 we know of so far, and eternal destinies are forever changed. Trump Portrays Himself As A Messianic Healer In New AI Image, Offering America A Counterfeit Antichrist Savior Vision That Mocks Jesus Christ

What makes this so grotesque is not merely that the image is theatrical, it is that it is blasphemous in tone. Donald Trump did not post some harmless patriotic meme. He posted imagery of himself doing what the New Testament shows the Lord Jesus Christ doing, laying hands on the afflicted as though he, Trump, were some kind of an anointed healer sent from heaven. That is not political branding, that is counterfeit messiah theater. It is the visual language of a man allowing himself to be cast in a role that belongs to Jesus Christ alone. Donald Trump has placed himself solidly in Antichrist territory, just look at the demon hovering over the top of his head and you’ll see what I mean.

“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Daniel 7:25 (KJB)

That is how strongmen are marketed. Even if you take the image at face value – Trump as president is healing America – that’s not even close to true. Trump has divided us at this point more than Obama did, and that’s saying something. Whether Trump thinks of it as trolling, branding, or feeding his base does not change what it is. It is a public act of self-exaltation dressed up in spiritual symbolism. This was not presidential. It was not funny. It was not inspiring. It was freakish, spiritually polluted propaganda, and every Christian ought to stand up and say so plainly. Real Victory In The Christian Life Does Not Come From Winning In The Flesh, But From Staying Close To Jesus Christ And Keeping The Faith To The End

In the 2011 movie ‘Moneyball’ Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane said: “I hate losing more than I even wanna win.”. The quote highlighted a philosophy focused on eliminating mistakes rather than solely chasing victory. In his 1993 lecture series “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie”, Dr. Joel Wallach said that if you want to be healthy, you have to “avoid stepping on the landmines” of poor health choices and vitamin deficiencies. In the life of the Christian, we avoid “losing” and “landmines” when we put our eyes squarely on Jesus Christ and trust Him and Him alone for the victory. Our apostle Paul clearly defines “losing” and “winning” in the life of the believer.

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:57,58 (KJB)

It’s How You Played The Game

Introduction

This lost world that we live in is obsessed with winning, but it has no idea what real victory actually is. To the lost man, winning is getting ahead, beating the competition, building a name, and protecting his own position. But in the Christian life, victory is not found in ambition, self-effort, or fleshly strength. The born again believer wins when he keeps his eyes on Jesus Christ, and he begins to lose the moment he starts trusting himself, fearing his circumstances, or walking by sight instead of by faith. The issue is not whether Jesus Christ can give the victory, because He already has. The issue is whether the Christian will stay fixed on Him.

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” Isaiah 45:22 (KJB)

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 (KJB)

“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” Philippians 3:7-10 (KJB)

Point 1: Losing Begins When You Take Your Eyes Off Jesus Christ

Peter is one of the clearest examples of this truth in the whole Bible. As long as his eyes were on Jesus, he walked where no man could naturally walk. But the moment he looked at the wind and the waves, he began to sink. Peter did not start going down because the Lord failed him, he started going down because he stopped looking to the Lord. That is exactly how spiritual defeat works in the life of the believer. We get our eyes on the storm, the pressure, the fear, the bills, the people, the disappointments, and the uncertainty, and once our attention shifts from Christ to the problem, we begin to lose ground.

“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.” Matthew 14:28-30 (KJB)

That is why so many Christians lose long before anyone sees the outward evidence of it. They lose in the heart first. They lose in the mind first. They lose when fellowship grows cold, when prayer becomes empty, when the Bible gets neglected, and when the eyes turn away from Jesus Christ. A Christian does not have to fall into open scandal to be losing. He is already losing when Christ is no longer the center of his attention.

DL Moody said “This Book will keep you from sin, or your sin will keep you from this Book.” Moody, speaking about the daily faith needed in the life of the Christian, said “I prayed for faith and thought that some day faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” I had up to this time closed my Bible and prayed for faith. I now opened my Bible and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since.”

Point 2: Victory Comes Only Through Jesus Christ, Never Through The Flesh

The Bible is plain that victory is not something the Christian manufactures by trying harder. Victory is something God gives through His Son. That strips away all boasting and all fleshly glorying. You are not victorious because you are disciplined enough, strong enough, or clever enough. You are victorious because Jesus Christ is sufficient. The flesh cannot win spiritual battles, and it never will. The believer who places confidence in himself is already on dangerous ground.

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57 (KJB)

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12 (KJB)

This is why pride is so deadly in the Christian life. The moment you think you are beyond failure, you are getting close to it. The moment you start trusting your own strength, you are preparing for defeat. God never intended for the Christian to live the victorious life in the power of the flesh. He intended for him to live in daily dependence upon Jesus Christ. That is why Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13 (KJB) The victory is through Him, the strength is through Him, and the endurance is through Him. Take Christ out of it, and all you have left is religious flesh pretending to be spiritual power.

In the book of Judges, God tells Gideon that his mighty army has too many soldiers, and needs to reduce the size of it, because if not, Israel will think that they won the victory instead of it being God who gave it to them

“And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.” Judges 7:2-7 (KJB)

Point 3: Bible Victory Is Faithfulness, Not Worldly Success

This world defines winning by numbers, applause, influence, money, and recognition. God defines victory by faithfulness. A man can have everything the world admires and still be a complete spiritual failure. Another man can be battered, opposed, ignored, and afflicted, and yet be a total success in the eyes of God because he stayed true to Jesus Christ and kept the faith. Bible victory is not about being celebrated, it is about being faithful.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:” 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJB)

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;” I Timothy 1:12 (KJB)

That is the pattern right there. Paul did not say he had the easiest road, the biggest crowd, or the greatest earthly results. He said he fought, he finished, and he kept the faith. That is how God measures victory.

“For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.” I Corinthians 4:17 (KJB)

The winning Christian is the one who stays in the Book, stays close to the Lord, stays humble, and keeps walking by faith when everything around him says to quit. That is why fellowship with Jesus Christ matters more than outward activity. Martha was busy, but Mary was at His feet. One was distracted, the other was centered. One was troubled, the other had chosen the better part. A believer can be active in ministry and still be losing if they are no longer sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Conclusion

The Christian life is won or lost by where your eyes are fixed. If they are fixed on the world, you will drift. If they are fixed on yourself, you will stumble. If they are fixed on the storm, you will sink. But if they are fixed on Jesus Christ, you will have victory. The issue is not whether the Lord can overcome, because He already has overcome. The issue is whether you will abide in Him, trust Him, and follow Him when the pressure is on.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:15-17 (KJB)

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (KJB)

So stop admiring the storm. Stop trusting the flesh. Stop measuring your life by worldly standards. Get your eyes back on Jesus Christ. Stay in the Book, stay on your knees, and stay close to the Lord. Real victory is not hype, image, or outward success. Real victory is keeping your eyes on Jesus Christ and remaining faithful to Him to the end. That is how the Christian refuses to lose, and that is how the Christian wins.

In conclusion, we find that one reasons sports are so popular in our modern-day culture is because we very much live in The Game. The people are the players, the game board is the world, the rules are found in the Bible, and we win eternally in Jesus Christ our Saviour who has in inheritance all set up and waiting for us.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5 (KJB)

In his 1941 poem entitled “Alumnus Football”, sportswriter Grant Richland said this:

“Keep coming back, and though the world may romp across your spine,
Let every game’s end find you still upon the battling line;
For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name,
He writes—not that you won or lost—but how you played the Game.”
