Harold Camping’s False Prophecies Have Real, Deadly Consequences

Harold Camping, the 89-year-old leader whose study of the Bible convinced him and his followers that the world would end, has been described by his wife as “flabbergasted” that the apocalypse didn’t start over the weekend. There are some red faces out there. And if that’s all it had been, then one could argue no great harm had been done.

But while Camping and his followers try to figure out what went wrong (or right) — with news Monday night that he now says Judgment Day will come on Oct. 21 — the failed prophecy did more than just damage Camping’s credibility: It also appears to have caused death and serious injury to true believers.
A California woman named Lyn Benedetto was one of millions who heard Camping’s message, and became concerned that her daughters would suffer terribly in the coming apocalypse. She allegedly forced her daughters, 11 and 14, to lie on a bed and then cut their throats with a box cutter. She then tried to kill herself, though police arrested Benedetto and all three survived.
Others were not so lucky. An elderly man in Taiwan reportedly killed himself on May 5 ahead of the Rapture by jumping out of a building. He had heard that doomsday was imminent, and had taken recent earthquakes and tsunamis as early warning signs.
There were other unconfirmed reports of doomsday-related suicides around the world as well. source – Yahoo News

Attempts to pull up the Family Radio website were unsuccessful at 11:19PM EST. No errors were returned, just an absence of pages. Looks like the webmaster was instructed to take everything down. NTEB will be interested to see if Family Radio still exists as a going concern come Monday, and what will be the health status – mental and/or physical – of cult leader Camping. In all of his pre-May 21 interviews, Camping would let out a hearty laugh when asked what the chances would be of him be wrong.

This is terrible. People are killing themselves because they sold everything to support him. This is the third time he has been proven wrong. I don’t understand why he is still around. Maybe his sinner’s prayer really does save, maybe that is why he is still around. I better stop, no one reads or thinks anymore. I hope they were at least saved. Suicide is never the answer.

It is terrible, and a tragedy, but more than likely…people who do these kinds of things usually have pre existing mental infirmities, the deception that Camping produced came from a deceived mind, and was probably the reason for some to get pushed “over the edge”. However, God DID use this to bring more unsaved to Him, as one mother who witnessed to her two children because of their fear of “the end of the world”, and lead them to Christ.

Yeah…. and to what end? To the end that they reject Christ and hate Christianity in a few years? I was southern baptist in my growing up, but then I read the Bible for myself instead of relying on a preacher to tell me what it says. Well, possibly an accessory to murder, anyway. As I stated previously, people who commit suicide and/or murder others usually are mentally disturbed BEFORE “triggers” cause them to do the act. And this was certainly a contributing factor to the tragedies that occurred, Camping will be held accountable when all is said and done, but likely won’t have charges pressed in this world anyway. Unless he repents, he will face God to answer for his “mistake” and the aftermath from it.

Who’s at fault? The answer is obvious, demonic forces that caused the mental breakdown and/or psychotic “break” these deluded people suffered from. The woman who tried to kill her children will likely wind up in a prison psych ward. Then she will face the Judgement seat of God.

The point I am trying to get across in regards to the delusional thinking of false “prophets”, even those who actually claim to be Christ Himself(Ra-El(Raymond Elwood), among others), is that these people have serious mental issues, likely for a long period of their lives, and left untreated, become deranged to the point of self inflicted harm, even suicide, as well as causing harm, even murder. Take for example the “Jim Jones Cult” in Guyana years back. He convinced HUNDREDs of people to swallow poison and shoot those who wouldn’t in the name of his own psychotic deceptions.Mark my words, this is NOT the last of this kind of tragic events, because the Bible prophecies state that MANY will pay heed to seducing spirits in the latter times. All we can do is pray for God’s guidance and wisdom to avoid this and pray for those who get caught in the snare of Satan’s trap.

I would just like to add that the ‘blame’ if you want to use that word, and we seem to like that as a society or bunch of Christians set in this time and space, ….. we forget pointing the finger leaves three pointing back at ourselves. I quite frankly am embarrassed by the amount of smoke and mirrors, energy and time that goes into fascination, addiction, pre occuppation with the last days and the details of the end all in the name of following Christ and putting Him first.
I wonder what it tells the world about how we actually live, what we believe about life and all its fullness. And all the other things we are asked to do as followers of Christ that involve getting our hands and hearts dirty, as opposed to forking out bills or consuming information be it church or on the web.
The church is full of this, or maybe its just here on the internet, people seem so absorbed by all of whats going down and the excitement of whats happening…..it’s like they have already left the building.
These people who did sad and silly things and the motivation or blame is being laid at Camping’s feet, I think they were influenced by a far wider culture of end time doom and gloom end time pre occupation that exists in the church and the media.
Tho I am a kiwi and my countries media is bad enough by feeding like vultures on disaster and strife, like voyeurs. Are they giving us what they think we want to see, or what they want us too see……for people , and normal people like me ( tho some will disagree with that ..that I am normal…….actually I do too)..the media in America where it all started will have had a field day on Camping and all the disasters and stuff happening.
I lived there for 9 months in 08 and have been there so I speak from personal acquaintance. THAT kind of daily menu for people effects your psyche. It effects mine and that’s why I limit me intact. I know people who live with the TV on 24/7.
So for me, between my disgust for this media driven, voyeuristic feeding frenzy 24/7 on the Camping thing and whats happening in the world , be it Tsunamis, nuclear reactors, earthquakes, tornadoes etc…and the pre occupation with many followers of Christ with the last days…I can understand why some people ………who for very human reasons quite apart from demons or mental problems can’t sort the wheat from the chaff and do something silly. What is the other message they are hearing from us about life, OR is the message now reduced to, get saved to get on the bus coz we are outta here????

Of course the last thing we do as a society is sit back and think about how we have contributed to it possibly……………..I believe we have a mandate to ask ourselves some hard questions. Until you become aware that your clothes are getting much much tighter, you can look in the mirror as think you are so okay and possibly not see the reality. Once you become aware perhaps, looking in the mirror is a different story………….

No offense taken, bud ^_^ I totally respect other people having different opinions… its only when other people act like their opinion is the absolute truth and yet I feel that it is unscriptural that I usually tend to get a bit fiery, and even then I try to stay cool, just don’t always succeed unfortunately (must either be the viking, scottish, or irish in me ^_^). I heard somewhere in the past that we shouldn’t be to hard on false teachers for if we weren’t so gullible they would not have a following.
I also have heard that we need to quite looking for scapegoats to blame for our choices.

Hey f.g.a not sure if you are serious or what……..if it worked online……..and I could help, I am happy to try. Again I think the comments re trying Mr Camping are interesting. Just how far down the line do we look to see who has blood on their hands. I really do think the media has a lot to answer for, and in a real sense the church has too because we let this kind of lunacy happen. Not a popular view. Applying that logic people who vote for or who support governments who go to war and people die, or who go and take other peoples lives, should they be charged for murder.
I like Terrys point. You are not a leader unless you have followers, and unfortunately, be it anywhere in society, church, politics or shopping, people are able to be manipulated and people adhere to and follow many things for reasons that are suspect and often rooted in fear and personal gain and safety. Totally understandable and human. Talking of charging Camping for murder ………………. the logic escapes me, and how does that fit with the god of freedom of speech………………

Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Son of the living God did not return on Mr. Camping’s schedule but his prediction brought a lot of attention to the fact that He plans on returning
Jesus is coming in the same manner in which He left, time zones and international date lines will be no problem.

Well i think that there is something rong with that man and who ever believe that in the bible it says that no man kind will ever know when or what time what year the world will end they have been saying this that the world will end but every time they have been rong only God knows when it will end and every time they say the world is going to end on this day its not why are we the ones that we have to be here for the day the world is going to end why are we the lucky ones ?
