Quietly and not so quietly, America seems to be undergoing a resurgence of open authoritarianism that previous president Barack Obama was reviled for. Barely 6 months into his second term, President Trump and those associated with him, are ramping up the rhetoric made famous in dystopian literature like George Orwell’s ‘1984’. In Washington, Trump is calling for a Federal takeover of DC streets, while Florida governor Ron DeSantis is planning a second FEMA internment facility at Camp Blanding in Clay County, Florida, not far from where our Bookstore is located.

All of this, we are told, is for our good and to make America a safer place to be, and that is partially true. Certainly something should be done about the perpetually-high crime rate in Washington, DC, and something should be done about the out-of-control illegal immigration problems we face. But is more authoritarianism the answer? History shows us that when something gets ‘federalized’, it gets progressively worse. Back in the 1980’s, the DoD was purchasing $500 hammers and $600 toilet seats amid the billions in waste that was uncovered. A government takeover of Washington DC would be a resounding failure, as will this second FEMA Camp being built in Florida. This is not what I voted for.

FROM FOX NEWS: Two 15-year-olds have been arrested in Washington in connection with the attempted carjacking and beating of one of the most prominent members of the Department of Government Efficiency, renewing calls from President Donald Trump for the federal government to seize control of the nation’s capital. In a social media post and remarks at the White House on Tuesday, the president described crime in Washington as “out of control.”

“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The District of Columbia has long served as a symbolic battleground in debates over crime and governance, and its lack of statehood has made it uniquely vulnerable to federal intervention. Republican leaders have frequently seized on episodes of violence to portray the city as a case study of violence in cities run by Democratic mayors, even as city officials note that violent crime overall is down more than 25% from the same period last year.

Still, local officials have acknowledged in recent years that youth crime, particularly carjackings, remains a serious concern. Just last year, a 14-year-old was charged with killing a Lyft driver in a botched carjacking, and a significant portion of carjacking arrests in Washington involve juveniles.

The Metropolitan Police Department said its investigation into the attack on Coristine remains active and additional suspects are still being sought. READ MORE

Camp Blanding ICE detention site construction could begin as early as Monday

Construction is expected to begin soon on a new ICE detention center in Clay County. The site at Camp Blanding near the Clay County-Bradford County line is being developed to hold about 2,000 people awaiting immigration hearings or deportation, Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

Ghislaine Maxwell was granted ‘limited immunity’ at her meetings with the Department of Justice, ABC News reported on Friday, citing sources.

If you think you’re unhappy now with the way that President Donald Trump has been handling the Epstein files saga, just wait until he pardons Ghislaine Maxwell and lets her out of prison. What’s that you say, it’ll never happen? The first step has already taken place today, the DOJ granted Maxwell a ‘proffer immunity’ which means that nothing she says about anyone related to the Epstein files can ever be used against her. That, my friends, is Step #1 on her way to a presidential pardon. That’s the memo.

President Trump was asked just hours ago about the possibility of a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, and he said that while it was within his power to do it, it was “something I had not thought about”. Hmm, really? OK. Maxwell was questioned today for the second time, and she give up information ‘on 100 different people’ thanks to her being granted immunity. That’s a lot of potential game-changing evidence, is Bill Clinton thinking about possible exit strategies tonight?

Here’s a likely scenario for what might happen next: Trump gives Ghislaine Maxwell immunity, which he did, she testifies and gives up one ‘big fish’ and maybe two or three medium sized ones. Trump then grants her clemency for bringing (some of) the perpetrators to justice, she gets out of jail and Trump gets the Epstein files elephant off his back (maybe). One thing is for certain, Trump needs to do something to stop the Epstein files express train from derailing his remaining 3.5 years in office, and certainly he needs to do something to save the midterms. Yes, it’s that serious.

Ghislaine Maxwell limited immunity row: What Trump’s order means for Epstein files

FROM THE HINDUSTAN TIMES: The publication added that the Jeffrey Epstein accomplice was questioned for about nine hours over two days. The immunity allowed Maxwell to freely answer Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s questions. Her answers will not be used against her in the future, the report stated. The proffer immunity is usually given to individuals prosecutors are seeking to cooperate with in a criminal case. Maxwell, who dated Epstein, has been convicted and sentenced for sex trafficking underage girls.

“There have been no asks and no promises,” Maxwell’s attorney, David Markus, told ABC News. He further added that she was asked about ‘maybe 100 different people’ during the interview and she answered every one of them.

This comes as Trump and Pam Bondi-led DOJ are facing backlash over the non-release of the infamous Jeffrey Epstein files. The administration previously said that there is no more evidence to be released. Trump’s executive order, signed July 24, directs the DOJ to facilitate state and local access to Epstein-related materials, including grand jury testimony, amid House Oversight Committee pressure.

The order might unlock new details on Epstein’s operations, with Maxwell’s testimony potentially implicating others, as suggested by her lawyer. On Friday, Trump again sought to put distance between himself and Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Ghislaine Maxwell will attempt to make a deal with the Trump administration when government officials visit her in prison to speak about the Epstein files

One story that I am surprised that no one seems to be pursuing is the possibility that Donald Trump met his wife Melania through Jeffrey Epstein, as many of Epstein’s sex trafficking victims came from Eastern European countries like where Melania is also from. In photos at least, Melania seems super comfortable around Epstein and his procurer Ghislaine Maxwell, but I’m sure that’s just a wild coincidence. Speaking of Ghislaine Maxwell, she is scheduled to testify today before Justice Department officials today and to expected to ‘cut a deal’. That’s the memo.

Just what type of deal would Ghislaine be interested in cutting? I suppose one that might dramatically lessen her prison sentence, and by all accounts, she is ready to sing like a canary. The only question is, will she tell the truth as it exists, or the ‘truth’ to get out of prison? Donald Trump right now needs more a little help to make the Epstein files mess go away, and Ghislaine just might be able to provide that help. At a cost. Will we ever know the truth about the Epstein files? Hard to say, but with all the amazing effort on both the parts of the Democrats and Republicans to make this all go away, that doesn’t seem likely.

Epstein lawyer: Maxwell will try to make a deal with Trump

FROM THE TELEGRAPH UK: Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced he would meet the convicted sex offender in the “coming days” to find out if she has information about anyone who participated in Epstein’s sex crimes.

“She’s going to make a deal” with the Department of Justice (DoJ), Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard law professor who previously represented Epstein, said. “That’s the way things are done. They make deals with the Mafia, so I’m certain they are going to try to make a deal with her,” he told The New York Post.

Jeffrey Epstein was asked if he ‘ever engaged in any activities involving underage girls with Donald Trump’, and he invoked not only the 5th Amendment, but the 6th and 14th also. Maxwell was subpoenaed by the House oversight committee on Wednesday to give a deposition from prison on August 11.

“The facts and circumstances surrounding both your and Mr Epstein’s cases have received immense public interest and scrutiny,” James Comer, chairman of the committee, wrote to Maxwell.

Mr Comer said the committee is seeking her testimony “to inform the consideration of potential legislative solutions to improve federal efforts to combat sex trafficking and reform the use of non-prosecution agreements and/or plea agreements in sex-crime investigations”.
