Christian Classic ‘Sheffey’ Is The Story Of 19th Century Circuit Riding Preacher Robert Sheffey That Will Rekindle Your Fire To Labor For The Lord Jesus

Robert Sheffey was a 19-century circuit riding itinerant preacher featured in Christian classic ‘Sheffey’ from Bob Jones University.

Robert Sheffey died on August 30, 1902, after having preached throughout Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. His tombstone simply reads, “The poor were sorry when he died.”

Shortly after I first got saved, and met some good Christian brothers who put Ruckman King James Bible commentaries in my hands, they also gave me a movie to watch that has stayed with me all these years later. It’s a Christian film from the 1970’s called ‘Sheffey’, and it presents the story of itinerant Appalachian preacher named Robert Sheffey, who loved lost souls and gave his life to bring them the gospel riding, on horseback.

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” 1 Timothy 1:12,13 (KJB)

On May 22nd, we here at NTEB are going to have an old-fashioned camp meeting on the 95-acre gorgeous Kelly Farms, that is smack dab in the style of those 19-century tent revivals of DL Moody and the Wabash Camp Meeting that Robert Sheffey poured his heart and soul into. We would love for you to come to our camp meeting, click image below to register.

In the meantime, please enjoy a fully restored and remastered version of ‘Sheffey’ from Unusual Films from Bob Jones University at the bottom of this article. Please comment after watching and let us know how you enjoyed it. It’s one of my favorite films of all time, and it will be one of yours as well, enjoy!

The Appalachian Mountain Preacher Who Loved Animals

FROM APPALACHIAN MAGAZINE: Born in Wythe County, Virginia, Robert Sheffey became orphaned at the age of two and was forced to move to nearby Abingdon, Virginia, to be raised by his aunt. Sheffey would later say that he was “born of the flesh on July 4, 1820, in Ivanhoe, Wythe County, Virginia, and that he was born of the Spirit on January 9, 1839, over Greenway’s store, at Abingdon, Virginia.”

It was on this blustering January day that Sheffey heeded Jesus’ call of “Ye must be born again…”Asking Christ to be his personal saviour, Sheffey soon surrendered his life to full-time ministry and the same autumn, he enrolled into Emory & Henry College. Unfortunately Sheffey’s “early dislike for books and an aversion for profound study,” made him a terrible student and the new believer soon dropped out of seminary. With no degree, but convinced of a heavenly calling on his life, Sheffey attempted to become ordained by the Methodist Church; however, his ordination was shot down due to his lack of education.

With no official ordination or formal degree, Sheffey set out into the hills and hollers of Appalachia as an itinerant preacher, circuit riding on horseback — roaming from town to town holding tent meetings and preaching a message of repentance. His lack of education did in no wise affect his ability to faithfully minister.

Many stories about Sheffey related to his power in prayer abound.  Some of his prayers concerned critical needs of agricultural communities, such as the need for rain in time of drought or the prevention of rain during harvest.  Other of his prayers centered upon his disdain for alcohol. According to an expert in the folklore of itinerant Methodist preachers, there are “at least twenty-five accounts of how Sheffey’s prayers led to the immediate destruction of whiskey stills and distilleries.”

According to one minister, Sheffey prayed for the destruction of three distilleries on a creek near where they had been preaching. The minister claimed the proprietor of one still, in robust health, died suddenly; at a second, Sheffey prayed that a tree would fall on the still house though there were no trees nearby, and a “great storm came and actually landed a tree on the still”; and a third still was destroyed by fire after Sheffey had spent a night in prayer against it. Men were said to have left the area rather than become the object of Sheffey’s prayers.

As incredible as these stories may be, the thing that makes the “Saint of the Wilderness” so unique among the men of his day may very well have been his love for animals.

He once dismounted to collect tadpoles in his handkerchief so that he could transfer them to a stream from a small pool where they were certain to die. Others he tried to save by bringing water to their mud hole. Sheffey regularly stopped to right beetles and dropped out of funeral processions to lift insects out of the way of wagon wheels. He gave his lunch to hungry dogs and tried (unsuccessfully) to “relieve” flies caught on sticky paper. Once when his brother-in-law cut a wasp in two with a pair of scissors, Sheffey went out to the yard and started praying. When the brother-in-law asked why, he replied, “I am praying for the Lord to make another wasp to take the place of the one you killed.” Sheffey was especially solicitous of his horse. He specifically instructed hosts how to water and feed his horse, and he often dismounted rather than make the horse carry him up a steep grade.

In addition to his affinity for animals, Sheffey was also known for his peculiar sense of humor.  He was once called to pray for a child that had been bitten by a rattlesnake. While praying, Sheffey is said to have petitioned, “O Lord, we do thank Thee for rattlesnakes. If it had not been for a rattlesnake they would never have called upon You. Send a rattlesnake to bite Bill, and one to bite John, and send a great big one to bite the old man.”

Robert Sheffey died on August 30, 1902, after having preached throughout Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. His tombstone simply reads, “The poor were sorry when he died.” READ MORE

When you contribute to this fundraising effort, you are helping us to do what the Lord called us to do. The money you send in goes primarily to the overall daily operations of this site. When people ask for Bibles, we send them out at no charge. When people write in and say how much they would like gospel tracts but cannot afford them, we send them a box at no cost to them for either the tracts or the shipping, no matter where they are in the world. Even all the way to South Africa. We even restarted our weekly radio Bible study on Sunday nights again, thanks to your generous donations. All this is possible because YOU pray for us, YOU support us, and YOU give so we can continue growing.

But whatever you do, don’t do nothing. Time is short and we need your help right now. If every one of the 15,860+ people on our daily mailing list gave $4.50, we would reach our goal immediately. If every one of our 150,000+ followers on Facebook gave $1.00 each, we would reach 300% of our goal. The same goes for our 15,900 followers on Twitter. But sadly, many will not give, so we need the ones who can and who will give to be generous. As generous as possible.

The Strait of Hormuz In The Persian Gulf Lit Up Like An Inferno After Six Tankers Attacked By Iran When Explosive-Laden Boats Struck Multiple Vessels

Oil Surges Above $100 As Six Ships Are Attacked In Strait Of Hormuz While Trump’s War With Iran Pushes Middle East Toward Wider Conflict

Oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel after multiple ships were attacked in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves through global markets and reminding the world just how fragile the modern economic system really is. As the war between the United States and Iran intensifies, one of the most important energy choke points on the planet is rapidly turning into a battlefield.

“And of Asher he said, Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.” Deuteronomy 33:24 (KJB)

Yes, oil is part of the story, and always has been. The Persian Gulf sits on top of one of the largest concentrations of energy reserves on the planet. When that supply is threatened, markets tremble. But the deeper reality is geopolitical power. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategic military choke points on earth. Whoever controls that corridor can influence the energy supply of Asia, Europe, and much of the global economy. This is how regional wars begin to spread. First it is military strikes, then retaliation, then attacks on global trade routes. Once shipping lanes become battlefields, the entire world begins to feel the consequences. As the war between the United States and Iran escalates and global energy markets begin to tremble, one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The world is moving into a period of profound instability exactly how the prophets said that it would be in the last days.

Oil prices surge above $100 per barrel after six ships attacked in Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz

FROM THE NY POST: The two most recent attacks, apparently carried out by explosive-laden boats, hit the tankers Safesea Vishnu and Zefyros in Iraqi waters, killing at least one crew member and setting the vessels ablaze. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attacks, releasing a video of the burning Safesea Vishnu in which a man can be heard shouting: “Allah is the greatest! The destruction of an American tanker in the northern district of the Persian Gulf! I obey you Khamenei! Hail be the Islamic Republic of Iran! Soldiers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy!”

“Expect oil at $200 per barrel,” a spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday aimed at the US. “The price of oil depends on regional security, and you are the main source of insecurity in the region.”

The latest attacks followed projectile strikes on four ships in the Strait of Hormuz since Wednesday and caused Brent crude futures to jump past the century mark before falling back to around $96.50 per barrel as of 7 a.m. ET. The attacks came hours after President Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels of oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to bring down gas prices that have surged by an average of 60 cents per gallon nationwide since America and Israel began joint attacks on Iran Feb. 28.

The IRGC has warned that any vessel which attempts to traverse the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabia Sea and through which an estimated one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, is subject to attack. READ MORE

The Bridgeport Correctional Center In Connecticut Processes Thousands Of Inmates Each Year And Their Goal Is A Bible For Every Prisoner Who Wants One

Published

SHARE NOW THE END BEGINS:

Thousands of inmates are processed and sent out through the Bridgeport Correctional Center each year, and they need a Bible to take with them as they go

The Bridgeport Correctional Center in Connecticut is a high-security facility located at 1106 North Ave Bridgeport, CT 06604, managing a diverse and predominantly pre-trial population. It serves as a central urban jail for the state, offering various rehabilitation, education, and vocational programs designed to assist in inmate reintegration. Today, Chaplain Steve has told us of their need for as many Bibles as we can provide, and I would love for us to be able to help him.

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;” Isaiah 61:1 (KJB)

Chaplain Steve writes “We are a large county jail with 1000s of individuals passing through our gates every year. some stay a long time, while others move on more quickly. We want to be able to give bibles to all inmates who request them, but we are currently having trouble keeping up with the demand. I see that the bible we give out are appreciated by the inmates.” Every day we receive multiple requests for free Bibles from individuals both locally and globally. Each week, we receive multiple requests for Bibles from chaplains who minister in the jails and prisons across America. Just this morning we finalized a request for 500 Bibles sent to a Georgia jail, and received a new request from the Bridgeport Correctional Center in Connecticut. Oftentimes new requests will come in while I am writing one of these articles, it’s honestly overwhelming but in a good way. Christian, God has given us an amazing open door in these closing moments of the Church Age to give out as many Bibles and devotional books as we possibly can, and it’s exciting. Prisoners are getting saved in the thousands, and being set free in Jesus Christ. There is much work to be done, come help us to do it!!

If God has prospered you, please take a moment to click on the donate button to help us in this monumental task of providing King James Bibles, New Testaments, scripture portions, gospel tracts as well as Spanish Bibles to inmates in jails and prisons from Florida to Alaska, and every state in between. We need your prayers, we need your generous financial support, and we need you to stand with us in the closing days of the Church Age. Thank you so very much, TO THE FIGHT!!!

THE PROPHECY NEWS PODCAST: They Are Calling It ‘World War Trump’ As Costs Rise Into The Billions With A Defiant Iran Vowing No Retreat And No Surrender

Published

on

SHARE NOW THE END BEGINS:

We are looking at World War Trump in Iran that just may produce the biggest military conflict anyone has seen since WWII

For weeks now the world has been watching the conflict that many are calling “World War Trump” unfold in real time, and the situation is becoming clearer by the day. President Donald Trump has demanded “unconditional surrender” from Iran, while Tehran has responded with open defiance, calling that demand nothing more than a “dream.” Iran is not surrendering. Not today, not tomorrow, and certainly not easily if at all.

“Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?” Luke 14:31 (KJB)

On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, the rhetoric coming from Washington is maximalist: surrender, regime change, and the installation of leadership acceptable to the United States. Iran’s response is equally absolute: we will not surrender, and that is the formula for a long war. History teaches this lesson over and over again. Nations rarely surrender when they believe their survival—or their ideology—is at stake. The Islamic Republic of Iran is built on resistance to the West; surrender would mean the collapse of the entire revolutionary system. This is a key point that Trump and his Department of War seem to be blissfully unaware of. The Middle East is the epicenter of the last days, and conflicts like this one are not random accidents of history. They are part of a geopolitical storm building toward the prophetic end times. The Bible warned that the last days would be a time of global instability and military tension. The stage is being set, and not for peace, but for the largest series of wars the world has ever seen. And if Iran refuses to surrender—as it clearly intends to do—the conflict now unfolding could become one of the sparks that ignites the next phase of global upheaval.
