“Our founder Jerry [Chen Chieh-Hsiao] was the first one to have a nasal swab from the robot and he was terrified,” a spokesperson for Brain Navi, Zoe Lee, told The Verge.

With each new day, another unsettling and often-times frightening new nugget is released, letting us know that 2020 is not like any other year. 2020 is the year that”it” finally happened, we crossed that thin line between what life used to be like, and what it is now like. Please remain calm while the Brain Navi robot swabs your nose

FROM THE VERGE: If you’ve been tested for COVID-19 then you’ve probably experienced the unpleasantness of a nasal swab. Someone takes a long-handled cotton swab and sticks it up your nose — way up your nose — until it reaches the back of the mucus-cave that is your nasal cavity. Upon arrival they give the swab a good twirl to collect your secretions and beat a merciful retreat. I can say from personal experience that it’s a uniquely unpleasant sensation. It’s something that just feels wrong, like the opposite of scratching an itch.

That’s perhaps why I was so unsettled by the sight of this autonomous nasal swab robot developed by Taiwanese medtech startup Brain Navi. Of all the entities I don’t want sticking cotton swabs up my nose, an industrial robot arm is pretty high on the list, right between an excitable toddler and a trained mountain gorilla. A nasal swab requires trust.

Nevertheless, the bot exists, and Brain Navi’s case for it is more compelling than you might think. As mass-testing ramps up globally, the company argues that automating testing could reduce infections and free up medical staff to tackle more pressing work. If we can get over our first impressions of a robot wielding a cotton swab, says the company, it may benefit us all. Doctors The Verge spoke to about the machine, though, were a bit more skeptical about its chances in the real world.

First, though, let’s talk about how it all works.

To begin the procedure, a patient dons a nasal clip that the machine uses to orientate itself. They then place their head in a metal bracket similar to those used for eye examinations (gripping the handle bars like you’re riding the world’s worst rollercoaster is apparently optional). A depth-sensing camera then scans their face and measures the distance from nostril to ear canal, which Brain Navi says is a reliable proxy for the depth of the nasal cavity, and helps the robot navigate safely inside you.

The robot then retrieves a cotton swab from it base and, with torturous slowness, approaches the victim patient. It inserts the swab, twirls it, then withdraws, placing the sample in a sterile tube for transportation and analysis. You can watch it all happen below.

Let’s be clear: this does not look like fun! This looks mildly terrifying! There’s something about the slowness and inevitability of the robot’s movements that feels like an implicit threat, and the whole operation has the vibe of an alien lobotomy.

Brain Navi is well aware of how it all looks. “Our founder Jerry [Chen Chieh-Hsiao] was the first one to have a nasal swab from the robot and he was terrified,” a spokesperson for BrainNavi, Zoe Lee, told The Verge. But she, says, it’s all a matter of familiarity. “I think people will be frightened because it’s a new thing but that’s normal. We’ve heard the feedback and are figuring out how to reduce this terrifying feeling.” READ MORE

Lee says Brain Navi is in talks with Taiwan’s Taoyuan international airport about the possibility of testing the robot on incoming passengers. As she explains, this would be the perfect show-case for the machine’s benefits. “Every country wants to reopen their economy, and to reopen safely, large scale testing [at airports] might be the key,” says Lee. She says the robot can perform a swab in just two minutes and will work non-stop.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt just did a really, really weird thing. She’s the official spokesperson for the President of the United States, and on the official Press Secretary social media channel on X, she urged all Americans to “Stop what you are doing and read this…” What does she want us all to read? A completely unverified account by a “witness to the attack” telling us about mystery weapons ‘being used to ‘bring the Venezuelan security forces to their knees without a fight’. Hmm…

I’ll be honest with you. When I first heard of this story, it sounded like a winner. A witness on the ground in Venezuela who watched it all unfold, describing the piercing agony of Maduro’s soldiers being brought to their knees with super-advanced ‘mystery weapons’ that sounded a like a Directed Energy Weapon. Wow, that’s great stuff! I was all set to run with that story until (insert the sound of screeching brakes) I saw it also posted on the White House Press Secretary’s social media page, tantalizingly unverified. You would think that for someone like Karoline Leavitt, who makes her living dishing out only verified accounts of what the president is saying, she could have taken 5 minutes and verified her post. But she didn’t. Why not? Maybe this account is true, but if it is, why is the official spokesperson for the president being so coy about it? It sounds to me just like the type of self-glorifying “press release” you’d expect from the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda from WWII. FROM THE NY POST: The US used a powerful mystery weapon that brought Venezuelan soldiers to their knees, “bleeding through the nose” and vomiting blood during the daring raid to capture dictator Nicolas Maduro, according to a witness account posted Saturday on X by the White House press secretary.

In a jaw-dropping interview, the guard described how American forces wiped out hundreds of fighters without losing a single soldier, using technology unlike anything he has ever seen — or heard.

“We were on guard, but suddenly all our radar systems shut down without any explanation,” the guard said. “The next thing we saw were drones, a lot of drones, flying over our positions. We didn’t know how to react.” Moments later, a handful of helicopters appeared — “barely eight,” by his count — deploying what he estimated were just 20 US troops into the area. But those few men, he said, came armed with something far more powerful than guns.

“They were technologically very advanced,” the guard recalled. “They didn’t look like anything we’ve fought against before.” What ensued, he said, was not a battle, but a slaughter. “We were hundreds, but we had no chance,” he said. “They were shooting with such precision and speed; it felt like each soldier was firing 300 rounds per minute.” Then came the weapon that still haunts him.

“At one point, they launched something; I don’t know how to describe it,” he said. “It was like a very intense sound wave. Suddenly I felt like my head was exploding from the inside.” The effects were immediate and horrific.

“We all started bleeding from the nose,” he said. “Some were vomiting blood. We fell to the ground, unable to move. We couldn’t even stand up after that sonic weapon — or whatever it was.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a question regarding whether Karoline Leavitt’s sharing of the post — captioned, “Stop what you are doing and read this…” — indicated the administration was verifying the veracity of the eyewitness account.

An estimated 100 Venezuelan security forces were killed in the Jan. 3 attack, according to the country’s Interior Ministry. It is unclear if any of those were caused by the mystery weapon. The outmatched defenders were helpless as the small US unit wiped them out, the guard said.

“Those twenty men, without a single casualty, killed hundreds of us,” he claimed. “We had no way to compete with their technology, with their weapons. I swear, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The US has had so-called directed energy weapons technology for years, an ex-US intelligence source told The Post, noting that some systems have  the capability to produce at least some of the symptoms, including “bleeding, inability to move or function, pain and burning.”

“I’m sending a warning to anyone who thinks they can fight the United States,” he said. “They have no idea what they’re capable of. After what I saw, I never want to be on the other side of that again. They’re not to be messed with.”

The guard said the raid has already sent shockwaves across Latin America — especially after President Donald Trump recently warned that Mexico is now ‘on the list.’ “Everyone is already talking about this,” he said. “No one wants to go through what we went through. Iran activates ‘missile cities’ over ‘Death to Dictator’ uprising as regime’s blackout sparks fear of ‘massacre’

FROM THE SUN US: As Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei barely clings to power, Donald Trump has warned the US “will get involved” if the mullah regime uses violence to crack down on demonstrators. At least 65 people including nine children have reportedly died amid the carnage which kicked off on December 28 and now marks the greatest challenge the Islamic regime has faced in years. Over 2,300 protesters have also been arrested with the violent demonstrations entering the two-week mark.

As Iranians took to the streets for the 14th consecutive day on Friday they were heard chanting anti-government slogans including: “Death to Khamenei!”

Hundreds of towns including the capital have been plunged into total anarchy – with shocking footage showing streets up in flames and swarms of locals destroying buildings. Trembling authorities have used tear gas to disperse large crowds of furious locals, while US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported gunfire across the country. Iran’s prosecutor-general Mohammad Movahedi Azad warned on Saturday that all protesters would face the death penalty, as he vowed to charge “rioters and terrorists” as “enemies of god”. Top Ayatollah crony and Tehran’s chief prosecutor Ali Salehi has also vowed to use the death penalty on some if they commit acts of vandalism.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been placed on the highest state of alert and authorities have activated “missile cities” – vast underground complexes packed with ballistic missiles. “We’ll be hitting them very hard where it hurts.”

Threatening to punish the mullahs if they killed protesters, the US president said: “You better not start shooting because we’ll start shooting too.” On Saturday Iran’s army urged citizens to stay alert to thwart what it called “enemy plots” in a desperate bid to blame other countries including the US for the national outrage.

The Ayatollah’s teetering regime has cut off all internet across Iran and plunged the nation into a near total communications blackout. Fears are now mounting that the Islamic Republic is cloaking a bloody crackdown.
