Two Weeks After We Shipped King James Bibles To Atascadero State Hospital, A Chaplain’s Beautiful Testimony Shows What Happened When The Boxes Were Opened

There are places in our society intentionally built for maximum separation, spaces where razor wire, heavy steel doors, and strict security protocols define daily life. The California Department of State Hospitals Atascadero is one of those places. As a maximum-security forensic psychiatric facility, it houses men who are navigating both profound psychological crises and complex legal paths. To the world, it is an institutional fortress. But to a ministry like Bibles Behind Bars, it represents a profound mission field. You are really going to enjoy what the chaplain there told us today about the impact the Bibles we send there have on the inmates.

“Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.” Psalm 142:7 (KJB)

We sent a shipment of Bibles to them about two weeks ago, and today I read this from Chaplain Anderson – “Thank you very much for the large print, King James bibles you sent to us. As I walked down the hallway with the warehouse cart full of beautiful bibles, patients stopped me many times and asked for a bible. As I walked, and gave out many bibles, I looked back and saw men stopped in the hallway, leaned up against the wall and each one began to read and devour their brand-new King James bible! The forensics maximum security state hospital for the criminally insane was instantly filled with peace. My heart was filled with a deep sense of awe and gratitude at the kindness and mercy of Jesus Christ. May our God continue to bless you and shine His Mighty Face upon your ministry!” The graphic you see at the top of this article is an artistic representation of what that might have looked like, and man oh man, I sure do wish I could have been there to see the looks on their faces as they recieved their new Bibles. Don’t you?

Christian, take a moment to think about how scary it must be to be committed to a place like Atascadero State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, and praise the LORD that it’s not you in there. Then take a moment to reread Chaplain Anderson’s wonderful testimony about how the Bibles we provide to them bring such a sense of peace to the souls in those dark corridors. Chaplains from both the Florence Service Processing Center and the Webb County Detention Center have reached out to us for Spanish Bibles for their inmates

This is one of those times where it is so very easy to see the Hand of God at work in the midst of chaotic circumstances. The headlines are full these days of stories about ICE being dispatched to arrest illegal immigrants, and take them to various holding facilities where they will await trial and then, mostly likely, deportation. Every single one of these people who find themselves behind bars for border crimes represent a precious soul that Jesus shed His blood for on the cross. And now we are being tapped, by God, to send in copies of His word to give to them. What an honor, what an amazing open door.

“Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.” 2 Timothy 2:9 (KJB)

Chaplain Alex Rey writes to us and says “The Florence Service processing Center houses individuals from different countries, many of whom are Spanish speaking. As chaplain, I hope to make 400 Spanish Bibles available to detainees so they can practice their faith, find confort and hope, and receive spiritual encouragement during their time in custody. Thank you for considering our request.” Christian, we are the main link in the supply chain for chaplains and pastors working in the prisons all across our great nation, and I believe that these requests originate in the Throne Room of God before popping up in our inbox. Funny thing, while I was writing this article you are now reading, I got an email from Chaplain Salazar from the Webb County Detention Center in Laredo, TX, and he says “Our Facility holds ICE detainees waiting for deportation and US Marshals inmates. We give Bibles to all detainees/inmates upon request and also we use them during Religious Services. Per ICE dynamic processes, the admission and release of detainees are executed almost every day. This Facility holds 499 beds. We are in need of Spanish Bibles.” We need to send out 1,000 RVG Bibles – the King James Bible in Spanish – to these two facilities costing right around $4,500.00. We are partnering with For His Glory Ministries to open the very first NTEB Free Bible location in Angeles City in the Philippines

For many years now, the NTEB Free Bible Program has sent out hundreds of thousands of free King James Bibles across America, and in dozens of countries around the world. One of the places where requests have come from more than nearly any other has been the Philippines. And through all that we have helped local churches there to get established and stocked with Bibles and gospel tracts in English and in their native Tagalog. Today we bring you the incredible news of the opening of the first NTEB Bible Store in Angeles City through our partnership with Mike and Michelle Burton of For His Glory Ministries. Praise the Lord!

“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJB)

Lori and I got to know Mike and Michelle earlier in the year when they came to our Bookstore in Palatka, FL. We began spending some time together and they shared with us their burden to move to the Philippines as missionaries. After lifting it up to the LORD in prayer, God gave them the ‘green light’, and by faith the Burtons packed everything up and went. Their website says this: “On August 7, we signed the lease on the ministry building in Angeles City. We now rent the entire upper floor. By God’s grace, we have personally paid for much of the work already completed: chairs, repairs, windows, a small kitchen and two bathroom areas. Our desire is to preach the Gospel, establish the work, equip Filipino believers and see Filipino men faithfully ministering to Filipino people.” Located in their new space, as you can see in the photo at the top of this article, a free Bible distribution center that will be supported, in part, in two ways.

First, we will be sending For His Glory Ministries a monthly financial contribution to be put towards their expenses. The first shipment of 100 Ruckman Reference Bibles arrived a few weeks ago, and have already nearly all been handed out. This is a much more cost-effective way than sending them out one at a time. But, this is also a massive undertaking, and can only be accomplished by the prayers and support from all of you. We estimate our monthly expenses to make all this work to be right around $3,000.00, and that number will rise as we send more and more Bibles and tracts.
