Illegal Search And Seizure Of Electronic Devices Approved By DHS
The Department of Homeland Security’s civil rights watchdog has concluded that travelers along the nation’s borders may have their electronics seized and the contents of those devices examined for any reason whatsoever — all in the name of national security.

The 4th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”
The DHS, which secures the nation’s border, in 2009 announced that it would conduct a “Civil Liberties Impact Assessment” of its suspicionless search-and-seizure policy pertaining to electronic devices “within 120 days.” More than three years later, the DHS office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties published a two-page executive summary of its findings.
“We also conclude that imposing a requirement that officers have reasonable suspicion in order to conduct a border search of an electronic device would be operationally harmful without concomitant civil rights/civil liberties benefits,” the executive summary said.
The memo highlights the friction between today’s reality that electronic devices have become virtual extensions of ourselves housing everything from e-mail to instant-message chats to photos and our papers and effects — juxtaposed against the government’s stated quest for national security.
The President George W. Bush administration first announced the suspicionless, electronics search rules in 2008. The President Barack Obama administration followed up with virtually the same rules a year later. Between 2008 and 2010, 6,500 persons had their electronic devices searched along the U.S. border, according to DHS data.
According to legal precedent, the Fourth Amendment — the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures — does not apply along the border. By the way, the government contends the Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone stretches 100 miles inland from the nation’s actual border.
Civil rights groups like the American Civil Liberties Union suggest that “reasonable suspicion” should be the rule, at a minimum, despite that being a lower standard than required by the Fourth Amendment.
“There should be a reasonable, articulate reason why the search of our electronic devices could lead to evidence of a crime,” Catherine Crump, an ACLU staff attorney, said in a telephone interview. “That’s a low threshold.”
The DHS watchdog’s conclusion isn’t surprising, as the DHS is taking that position in litigation in which the ACLU is challenging the suspicionless, electronic-device searches and seizures along the nation’s borders. But that conclusion nevertheless is alarming considering it came from the DHS civil rights watchdog, which maintains its mission is “promoting respect for civil rights and civil liberties.”
“This is a civil liberties watchdog office. If it is doing its job property, it is supposed to objectively evaluate. It has the power to recommend safeguards to safeguard Americans’ rights,” Crump said. “The office has not done that and the public has the right to know why.”
Toward that goal, the ACLU on Friday filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding to see the full report that the executive summary discusses.
Meantime, a lawsuit the ACLU brought on the issue concerns a New York man whose laptop was seized along the Canadian border in 2010 and returned 11 days later after his attorney complained.
At an Amtrak inspection point, Pascal Abidor showed his U.S. passport to a federal agent. He was ordered to move to the cafe car, where they removed his laptop from his luggage and “ordered Mr. Abidor to enter his password,” according to the lawsuit.
Agents asked him about pictures they found on his laptop, which included Hamas and Hezbollah rallies. He explained that he was earning a doctoral degree at a Canadian university on the topic of the modern history of Shiites in Lebanon.
He was handcuffed and then jailed for three hours while the authorities looked through his computer while numerous agents questioned him, according to the suit, which is pending in New York federal court. source – Wired

This is why I told our church to quit holding on to this life, this country, and quit putting complete trust in our government. We need government, but honest government – not what we have now. We have members SO wrapped up in politics that they’ll say, “No, they won’t do that. It’s against the Constitution.” or “Obama won’t be able to – it goes against ‘this’ amendment.” I’m sorry – was we expecting complete honesty? Was we expecting this life to go on peacefully at our leisure, and the Holy Bible unfulfilled? What makes it unbelievable church?! “If they hated me, they will hate YOU.” Is that not what our Lord said, among other warnings? WATCH, children of God. Watch for His glorious appearing like you’ve never watched before.

Eric may have the right idea. Perhaps it is time to just let go. It’s as if we’re beating a dead horse really-trying to wake people up from their false sense of security in order to keep our country. The people have desired to remain in the dark. They have preferred a lie and welcome all manner of sin. Clearly, we who follow Jesus are outnumbered. Perhaps we should just pray and make sure we’re ready for the times ahead and just keep looking up (for our redemption draweth nigh.) If it’s time for it all to fall & that’s what God has ordained then let it fall.

I’ve constantly worked to follow this Holy Scripture and I’ve been very happy and at peace until Jesus comes.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:15-17

If they were really intent on controlling the illegal traffic back and forth ancient technology would of worked! It’s all about control & bringing America down! Nothing makes logical sense that’s being done unless the sense is of the devil!
All that matters is the treasure’s stored in Heaven (hope I will have at least one to lay at His feet) now! The World (most) will be glad when we Christians are gone, well let me tell you, I too will be glad, so will you all, amen?! It will be great to finally be Home, never to be separated from Him physically again! This world is regurgitating the works of that elite evil ones are doing to it. Just think how serene it will be when the Great Monarchy (Jesus) brings the title deed back with Him and all will be witnesses of the ‘Great Wine Press’ at work, then Total Peace, Creation will respond with Glee!
love you all,
God bless,
it can’t be
that long
now!

I’m in Canada. Don’t be so quick to condemn. This guy could have been a terrorist; maybe we should be grateful he was intercepted. Canada has allowed so many lunatic, radical Muslims into the country, they are finally beginning to question their policies. They’re starting to question Muslims who are immigrating about their beliefs, after so many cases of fathers and uncles beating girls who refuse to “obey”: as in marry a man 30 years older, do what they want. These radicals are teaching their children to be terrorists: Omar Khadr went to Pakistan with his father, built a bomb, took it to Afganhistan, killed an American soldier, was sent to Gitmo for five years but Ovomit sent him back here, where he has it cushy in prison but he’s eligible for parole in a year! The soldier who caught him should have shot him! He’s a hero here in the Muslim community! You have communities like that, too – outside Detroit, for example. If the only way to catch these lunatics, who take advantage of our freedom while vowing to destroy us, is to look through our computers, BRING IT ON! You’ve been warned. Leave yours home. I’m pretty sure the terrorists don’t read this website.

If you don’t have anything to hide, you shouldn’t worry about the gov. taking your laptop. The more you worry and fuss about the gov., the more your stress will go up and doctors you’ll have to see. Trust in the Lord and keep witnessing to people who need to know our Lord Jesus before it’s too late. We are not here for ourselves only but to be witnesses until Christ comes. Yes, we should keep our eyes and ears open to the truth, but fretting about our rights being taken away will not accomplish the great commission to send God’s word of the kingdom to all the world until he comes again!
