Robert Sheffey died on August 30, 1902, after having preached throughout Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. His tombstone simply reads, “The poor were sorry when he died.”

Shortly after I first got saved, and met some good Christian brothers who put Ruckman King James Bible commentaries in my hands, they also gave me a movie to watch that has stayed with me all these years later. It’s a Christian film from the 1970’s called ‘Sheffey’, and it presents the story of itinerant Appalachian preacher named Robert Sheffey, who loved lost souls and gave his life to bring them the gospel riding, on horseback.

“And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” 1 Timothy 1:12,13 (KJB)

The Appalachian Mountain Preacher Who Loved Animals

FROM APPALACHIAN MAGAZINE: Born in Wythe County, Virginia, Robert Sheffey became orphaned at the age of two and was forced to move to nearby Abingdon, Virginia, to be raised by his aunt. Sheffey would later say that he was “born of the flesh on July 4, 1820, in Ivanhoe, Wythe County, Virginia, and that he was born of the Spirit on January 9, 1839, over Greenway’s store, at Abingdon, Virginia.”

It was on this blustering January day that Sheffey heeded Jesus’ call of “Ye must be born again…”Asking Christ to be his personal saviour, Sheffey soon surrendered his life to full-time ministry and the same autumn, he enrolled into Emory & Henry College. Unfortunately Sheffey’s “early dislike for books and an aversion for profound study,” made him a terrible student and the new believer soon dropped out of seminary. With no degree, but convinced of a heavenly calling on his life, Sheffey attempted to become ordained by the Methodist Church; however, his ordination was shot down due to his lack of education.

With no official ordination or formal degree, Sheffey set out into the hills and hollers of Appalachia as an itinerant preacher, circuit riding on horseback — roaming from town to town holding tent meetings and preaching a message of repentance. His lack of education did in no wise affect his ability to faithfully minister.

Many stories about Sheffey related to his power in prayer abound.  Some of his prayers concerned critical needs of agricultural communities, such as the need for rain in time of drought or the prevention of rain during harvest.  Other of his prayers centered upon his disdain for alcohol. According to an expert in the folklore of itinerant Methodist preachers, there are “at least twenty-five accounts of how Sheffey’s prayers led to the immediate destruction of whiskey stills and distilleries.”

According to one minister, Sheffey prayed for the destruction of three distilleries on a creek near where they had been preaching. The minister claimed the proprietor of one still, in robust health, died suddenly; at a second, Sheffey prayed that a tree would fall on the still house though there were no trees nearby, and a “great storm came and actually landed a tree on the still”; and a third still was destroyed by fire after Sheffey had spent a night in prayer against it. Men were said to have left the area rather than become the object of Sheffey’s prayers.

As incredible as these stories may be, the thing that makes the “Saint of the Wilderness” so unique among the men of his day may very well have been his love for animals.

He once dismounted to collect tadpoles in his handkerchief so that he could transfer them to a stream from a small pool where they were certain to die. Others he tried to save by bringing water to their mud hole. Sheffey regularly stopped to right beetles and dropped out of funeral processions to lift insects out of the way of wagon wheels. He gave his lunch to hungry dogs and tried (unsuccessfully) to “relieve” flies caught on sticky paper. Once when his brother-in-law cut a wasp in two with a pair of scissors, Sheffey went out to the yard and started praying. When the brother-in-law asked why, he replied, “I am praying for the Lord to make another wasp to take the place of the one you killed.” Sheffey was especially solicitous of his horse. He specifically instructed hosts how to water and feed his horse, and he often dismounted rather than make the horse carry him up a steep grade.

In addition to his affinity for animals, Sheffey was also known for his peculiar sense of humor.  He was once called to pray for a child that had been bitten by a rattlesnake. While praying, Sheffey is said to have petitioned, “O Lord, we do thank Thee for rattlesnakes. If it had not been for a rattlesnake they would never have called upon You. Send a rattlesnake to bite Bill, and one to bite John, and send a great big one to bite the old man.”

Iran is strengthening its air defense systems amid preparations for the possibility of an American or Israeli attack on the country’s nuclear infrastructure should nuclear negotiations fail

For years, Israel had a “Hamas problem” right on their border, one they should have done something about but never did. On October 7th, 2023, 1,200 Israelis paid the ultimate price for Israel’s refusal to take proactive steps to prevent tragedy. Israel has an “Iran problem” with the current state of that nation’s nuclear facilities, and for whatever reason, they are not taking enough proactive steps to prevent Tehran from creating nuclear weapons. In the United States, President Trump is chasing after the same failed nuclear treaty with Iran that didn’t work when Obama tried it in 2015. While both nations dither, Iran is busy bolstering their nuclear plants against airstrikes. That’s the memo.

As we told you on the Podcast yesterday, things are rapidly coming to boil not only in the Middle East, but in Europe also. Behind the scenes, the CRINK Alliance grows stronger by the day. Iran will never keep any agreement they make, their track record speaking volumes in that regard. The only thing that will make any difference is a military strike on all their nuclear facilities, above and below ground, wherever they may be. Iran preparing for Israeli, US strikes, building up air defense systems

FROM THE JERUSALEM POST: According to Western intelligence assessments and security analysts’ investigation of satellite imagery, Iran appears to have relocated several anti-aircraft missile launchers to positions close to key nuclear sites like Natanz and Fordow, the report says. A significant portion of Iran’s most advanced anti-aircraft missiles and radar systems – including its long-range Russian S-300 systems – were destroyed or damaged during Israeli air strikes on the country in October and April 2024, the FT states.

“We are witnessing an impressive improvement in the capabilities and competence of the country’s air defense system,” Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Baqeri reportedly said in May, adding that Iran’s military has seen a “multi-fold increase in investments.”

“The enemies of the Iranian nation should understand that any violation of our airspace will cause them significant harm,” he added.

Military equipment and weapons have been publicly displayed in Iran, with an S-300 launcher and a radar truck presented in Tehran during the country’s Army Day celebrations in May, and an S-300 shown launching an anti-aircraft missile during a military exercise in February.

“There is no doubt that Iran is seeking to refute the claim that its advanced air defense systems have been destroyed,” Nicole Gryzewski of the Carnegie Institution in Washington told the FT.

“Israel currently has almost complete air superiority over Iran,” Robert Tolast, a researcher at the British RUSI Institute, told the FT. “But such an attack would require waves upon waves of aircraft for hours. Crew fatigue comes into play – the longer they are over Iran, the greater the chance that something will go wrong.”

“From the Iranian side, this effort is trying to recreate the success story of Iran’s ballistic missile development program,” Fabian Hintz, a research fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Britain, said to the FT.

Dealing with this defense system would not be easy for Israel, John Alterman, chairman of the Global Security and Geopolitical Strategy Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, told the FT. “But is it beyond Israel’s capabilities? No, of course not. The Israelis have been training for exactly this scenario for decades.” READ MORE

We told you in the beginning of this month about longtime listener Gary McCraw who attends Antioch Baptist Church in Aubrey, Texas, who had written to us asking for help in replacing the NIV bibles at their Church with God’s preserved word. He had heard of so many others times about the NTEB Free Bible Program, suppling Bibles for others, and wanted to know if we could lend a hand to them, as well. Antioch Baptist is a tiny, little remnant Church and now their pews are filled with King James Bibles.

Remember Pastor Rick from the Murray County Jail in Dalton, Georgia? He wrote to us over the weekend, as excited as a little kid at Christmas, after he received the 500 Bibles we sent him last week. He said “Praise the Lord! The shipment arrived Saturday afternoon May 31st. We received 30 cases of Bibles and the boxes of books as well. ‘Russian bombers are burning en masse’ — Ukraine’s SBU drones hit ‘more than 40’ aircraft in mass ‘Pearl Harbor’ attack on Putin, source says

An operation by Ukraine’s Security Service using first-person-view drones smuggled deep inside Russian and hidden inside trucks has hit 41 Russian heavy bombers at four airfields across the country, a source in the agency told the Kyiv Independent on June 1. “Currently, more than 40 aircraft are known to have been hit, including the A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22 M3,” the source added. The SBU later reported that the drone operation caused approximately $7 billion in damages and disabled 34% of cruise missile carriers in key Russian airbases. That’s the memo.
