Pope Francis Says That People Who Make And Sell Guns Are Not Christian

“It makes me think of ... people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit of distrust, doesn’t it?” he said to applause.

At a rally of young people in Turin, Pope Francis issues his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry, criticising investors as well as workers

“Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.” Luke 22:36 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Pope’s personal protection army, known as the Vatican Swiss Guard, all carry the SIG SG550 rifle. This 5.56mm NATO select-fire rifle has a 20.8-inch barrel and is one of the most accurate and reliable modern combat rifles. Its 30-round clear lexan magazines clip together like ‘jungle mag’ style for rapid exchanges. The Guard owns both the standard StW90 rifle variant and the SG 552 Commando model (with 8.9-inch barrel, 19.8-inches overall with stock folded). With the Swiss military tradition of marksmanship, it’s guaranteed that these soldiers can use them if needed. So shall we assume that none of the Vatican Swiss Guard, who all pack heat, would be Christians according to Pope Francis?

People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday. Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry at a rally of thousands of young people at the end of the first day of his trip to the Italian city of Turin.

“If you trust only men you have lost,” he told the young people in a long commentary about war, trust and politics, after putting aside his prepared address.

What a wacko. What nerve for this imposter to call anyone a hypocrite. He should look in the mirror for the definition of hypocrite. I am sick of this guy, and to think many people worship him. Pathetic!

  • Larry Grant

I guess the punk, the poke, the pope never read Jesus’s comment, “to sell your cloak and buy a sword”? The pope is a moron, our president is a moron and the earth is suffering from being led by the mentally ill.

    • Sorry to say it ,but I don’t think he knows what he is saying. You beat me to the punch there Larry. I was just about to say the same thing. Is the pope trying to say he knows better ? My FATHER in heaven knows best. In Mat.23:9 JESUS says to call NO man father for you have but one father and he is in heaven. That is just one reason I could never be a catholic. They say all the wrong things. Check out “the Islamic connection to Rome Catholicism”. You better be sitting down when you do read it.

  • Dan

Good one Pope.. Tell you what ; You go first .. Walk the streets without security and show us how safe the world is.. Please show us how beloved you are!

  • Marianne Bernard

Does this Pope want us to think that he doesn’t have armed guards surrounding and protecting him. This is too hypocritical.

    • cm

      Excellent Point!!!!

    • You are sooooo right. Don’t do what I do, do what I say do.

Sampson Needs to return with the Jaw Bone of a Jack Ass.

    • Leonard

Apparently, he loaned BOTH of the asses’ jawbones to Francis the Talking Pope…

  • I think the Pope is definitely a false prophet. He has no business in the political arena. Wonder how he fooled all those priest that picked him? Think the evil one has penetrated the Vatican?

  • Hate to see him influencing the young people. We need them.

  • cm

This Pope is clearly a puppet for the New World Order, and the Elite’s of the world who are working over time to try and disarm the American Public and the world from the looks of things.

Controlling people is much easier if you disarm them first. Didn’t Hitler disarm the public as well??? Especially the Jewish people?

This Pope is evil and has a anti-christ spirit. Sickening!!!

  • eddie santana

It’s interesting. People incorporate weapons into their identity or masculinity so it goes far beyond rights. That’s why people are so defensive about their gun rights…just like tattoos or piercings or anything else people need to make them “feel better” about themselves and their world.

    • James Montgomery

I would not compare people that owns guns with people that get tattoos or piercings. But I do not agree with people with children that own guns and do not keep them secure that those children and get to. I guarantee you that if and when the day comes that our government take all the guns from the population of this country (U.S.)is the day you well not have any freedoms left.

      • That day will NEVER come. That is unless we are all dead.

    • The Infidel

      No guns – No America
The United States is 3rd in Murders throughout the World.
But if you take out just 4 cities: Chicago, Detroit, Washington, DC and New Orleans,
the United States is 4th from the bottom, in the entire world, for Murders.
These 4 Cities also have the toughest Gun Control Laws in the U.S.
ALL 4 of these cities are controlled by Democrats.
It’s just the opposite of his mental sick thinking – the more dangerous things are the more you need to be able to protect yourself and your family. Not to give up your protection
Weapons of choice – AR15 with hollow points (same as the police use) – pump shotgun with 000 buck shot
Michael Savage is right – Liberalism is a mental disorder. All the patsies that won’t stand up for our freedoms can just kiss the boots of their masters – what a disgusting bunch of pucks. I for one will be glad to forget they were ever one of our countrymen.

      • I have nothing but slugs. (SST)

  • What about all the catholic priest that molest children that are and have been entrusted in their care. These children are scarred for life and many have physical and mental problems that keeps them from living a normal life. I suggest the Pope take care of his flock and leave his political views to people whom have more knowledge of our world and the life styles around us. The Pope can’t even keep his flock from predators so how in the world does he expect to protect the rest of the world to abide by his rules and regulations. Look at Pelosi and all the catholics that we have in Congress, Senate, and those on the Supreme Court. God Help Us.

    • GOD is the only one that can help us. Man has been doing a very poor job since the beginning of time. There is proof.

  • This Abomination pope is Very Hypocritical, and he is anti-Christian!!

  • How would this black Pope, (Lincoln killer type)even know what an actual Christian is? This whole Global movement is Satanic, designed to reveal the man of sin, the son of perdition, on a natural level – to be worshiped as God!

    • Hope

Roland, you are absolutely right! Amen!

  • Kelly

I expected nothing less from the anti Christ.

  • Chris

All Marxists think alike. Maybe he should watch the movie Schindler’s List a few times before he spouts off his rhetoric. In an imperfect world we have already banned and made illegal drugs, medicines and a thousand other things that all all be bought for a price on the street.

The second amendment works! Please leave it alone already.

  • Tusitala

Isn’t this the same person who said he could not judge a “gay person of good will”? Isn’t this the same warm, fuzzy guy who remained mute during some of the worst atrocities in South American dictatorships, and continues to rule over a “church” rife with sexual predators in the clergy? Yet, he surely does not seem to have a problem judging all those who are in any way opposed to the agenda of the satanic New World Order. If you own property, do not buy into the global warming scam, or bear arms, Francis surely DOES know how to judge you, be you of good will or not. Hypocrisy, thy name is Francis. I simply cannot abide seeing his evil, smiling face, dear Jesus, please return and stop this madness.

Did you know that Bernardo Nogara, Pope Pius XI’s financial advisor, invested Vatican funds *heavily* in corporations that made armaments — and with Pius XI’s knowledge and concent? Vatican finances *directly* supported Mussolini’s conquest of Ethiopia and the Axis’ war effort.

Where did Nogara get the money? When Italy and the Vatican signed a treaty in 1929 that enabled the Vatican to maintain its status as an independent state, Mussolini gave the new state 750 million lire in cash and consolidated bearer bonds with a coupon rate of five per cent and a nominal value of 1 billion lire. The funds were indemnification for Italy seizing parts of the Papal States to incorporate into the Italian nation in the 1860s. I have no idea how much this would be in dollars or pounds sterling.

When this Pope actually sells some of the billions the Vatican owns in stocks, bonds and other financial vehicles and give some of those proceeds to ministries and agencies helping the poor and persecuted Christians, then I’ll take him seriously. He can start by divesting from those armaments manufacturers in which the Vatican has invested — such as Beretta, in which the Vatican is the largest shareholder!

  • Craig novak

you can see where pope Francis is coming from If you have been following his path since he became pope. This is all part of the end times role he is playing in seemingly bringing “peace! Peace” but as the scriptures say …sudden destruction occurs!! watch him in Sept when he does two historic things …speaks to Congress and then the United Nations with his blueprint to save mankind from ecological disaster. he is being used as a mouthpiece for the powers of evil.

  • Isn’t that just ironic. Here is this man, who claims to be the “Vicar of Christ” saying that you can not be a Christian and make guns, while he continually makes numerous statements that go against the Gospel of Christ and the Scriptures. What if a person is making knives, swords, bullets, nail guns, hammers, hatchets, or axes? Is he a Christian. He is definitely the false prophet from Revelation. Wake up Catholics, leave this false religious system as I have done.

So…the people that protect the pope. Do they use squirt guns?

  • Ed

Im not so sure this is true im an atheist and ive heard of things hes done and said this doesnt sound like him at all.

  • If the Christians had no weapons to defend themselves way back when the Romans and Barbarians were out trying to take over the world there would have been total anarchy even today. Obviously, that is not what God’s plan was nor shall ever be since he is in charge. He gave us the brains to defend ourselves. The problem is that today a multitude of people around the globe have gone soft and think our governments will keep us safe. It has nothing to do with whether you or I are Christian or not.

  • MG

Seems to me that the people who guard his sorry arse carry guns, who then sold them and who paid for them? Probably him and his vatican city monies. Double standard wouldn’t you say? And further more, he really should have nothing to do with policy in this country…we have the right to make and bear arms if need be. So then, justify the soldiers, Jesuit priests, assassins who work for this pontiff. They must not be Christian. Further more, he, is not Christian. And regardless of what this being says, we will always have guns,…and they are not dangerous until the trigger is pulled. But trying to take someones gun, that’s what they need to fear. Sadly it’s never reported as to the fact that guns have lowered crime. Criminals have found out that when they believe their target is armed, it’s less likely that they want to be shot. They are called peace makers for a reason. One man’s sword keeps the other man’s sword in it’s sheath. Who then decides who can have a gun? Well, they make them right? Then it’s a matter of free choice and responsibility. But be responsible. Anything can be a weapon, not just guns.

Pope–please explain disarmament to the millions slaughtered by totalitarian regimes. Please explain for example to the 1.5 million Armenians who were murdered by the Turks, disarmed in advance. Explain to the innocents who may want to defend themselves now. If you look in the Bible the people of Israel were under domination by the Philistines because nobody had a weapon. (I Samuel 13).

  • George

The pope said that a person who calls himself a Christian and manufacturers guns is a hypocrite. What do you call a person that employs 135 Swiss Guards who are trained in a wide range of weaponry and advanced combat tactics? What do you call the leader of the world’s largest religion who has perpetrated sexual sins on our youth? Be careful who you call a hypocrite.

  • Sorry Mr pope, only Jesus and his sacrifice declares me righteous, christian and saved. Who are you to say otherwise!!

    • vietnamvet1971

I agree, My Father is in Heaven and it is not the Pope and his false religion deceiving people.

  • Tom Tom

If we get our info exclusively from disingenuous and explosively headlined articles designed to generate misinformation and inflamed responses, then we will continue in our ignorance of topics such as this.

Christianity should and must always be “The Critique” of all ideologies and “gods.” Taken with this as a back-drop, it is understandable and, in fact, perfectly appropriate for Francis (speaking in his position as a religious visionary) to question whether it is problematic for Christians to be in the business of manufacturing weaponry. A call to the world to be as it SHOULD BE, as it was intended to be, Not necessarily as it is, nor even, practically speaking, can be at this juncture of history.

Recall: Isaiah 2:4-5: ” And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.” We do not live, yet, in the perfect world dreamed of in the visions of Isaiah, but it is certainly a vision worth striving for, is it not? Don’t get confused by thinking a religious leader is speaking practically and politically. For example, How irritating is to our sense of fairness and justice that Jesus told the parable of the Vineyard owner (Mt.20:1-16) hiring workers late in the day and then giving them the same pay. The spiritual vision Jesus was expressing in that parable has nothing to do with how a business owner should run a business and pay employees. It IS about anyone who works for The Kingdom of Heaven, whether they have been it it for a LOOOOONG time or new to the toil will receive the same reward.

Just a caution to remember the context of a spiritual leader who is calling us to a HIGHER GOOD, a vision of a world where guns will not be needed, and the sun will be no more….. (IS 60:18-20 and Rev 22:5) because the Lord himself will be our Light….I can still be inspired by Francis and his call/reminder of ETERNAL TRUTH and recognize the unfortunate necessity of gun ownership and weapon building in this sinful world. I pray and wish it will be otherwise but for now, we must be prepared to fight the demons that would destroy the vineyard (The Kingdom of God).

Remember spiritual leaders (and all of scripture for that matter) point us to our WHY (call us to our essence), but don’t necessarily offer a blueprint on HOW here and now.

    • TomTom

I reiterate that Francis is NOT out of line with his visionary statement. It is a reminder to us of how things “should” be, “ought” to be, in the Kingdom of God where the lamb will lay down with the lion. His statement is NOT a call to disarm except to the extent that we should all be working toward a world of peace where weapons are not required. However, in this sinful world which unfortunately requires that we be armed – for now – for protection and defences against the wolves, that armament should always be the armor of God. Worn and used to further the Kingdom of God. Francis is not one of the wolves. He is a sincere visionary and an example of selfless love. That is what I see and hear when I listen to him.

I am amazed at the silly accusations and axe grinding being spewed at Francis in some of the comments to this article – the article which is itself deliberately explosive and baiting. Apparently the article’s author is getting the desired result based on the level of reactionary and less than thoughtful responses

      • Joseph D’Hippolito

TomTom, whether Francis is one of the wolves is a separate issue from the issue of whether he really meant what he said. This is a direct quote from Reuters, an international news service that has existed for more than a century:

“It makes me think of … people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn’t it?”

That seems pretty direct, doesn’t it?

We can talk about visionary statements all we want but the fact of the matter is that papal statements are meant to be applied in this life. Otherwise, why would any Pope make any statement about any issue?

Here is another quote from AGI, the Italian news service:

“It makes me think one thing: people, leaders, entrepreneurs that call themselves Christians, and produce arms! This gives some mistrust: they call themselves Christians! ‘No, no, Father, I don’t produce them, no, no …. I only have my savings, my investments in arms factories.’ Ah! And why? ‘Because the interest is somewhat higher …’ And a double face is also a current coin today: to say something and do another. Hypocrisy …”

Given that the Vatican has invested in arms manufacturers since the 1930s, and given that the Vatican is the single-largest shareholder in Italy’s Beretta, then he should demand that the Vatican’s financial apparatus divest itself of Beretta stock immediately!

One should also remember that the Vatican has invested in a German publishing company that produces, among other things, pornography.

It’s not a stretch by any imagination to consider this pope, as well as his two predecessors, as hypocrites when it comes to arms, sexuality and the poor.

        • Tom Tom

Thank you, Joseph, for your kind response.
Your points are well taken. I am not conversant in the stock holdings of the Vatican. Agreed that one can find problematic holdings in all sorts of religious and non-profit organizations inasmuch as their financials are probably often managed by 3rd party money managers. Certainly, I agree, if Francis is aware of this dichotomy to his professed example, he should do what he can to divest of the contradictions.
I didn’t mean to imply Francis wasn’t recommending a real life, here and now “doing” what he is preaching. If the Kingdom is to come, then we must do what we can in our little corners to affect that advent. BUT I do remember clearly back when I was teaching high school students that I would often raise questions that I personally may have been struggling with to get some input from my students – not to dogmatically pretend I had the answer – for example: “To what extent is poverty systemic or to what extent is it a function a function of the low motivation of the poor.” I imagine here, rightly or wrongly, that Francis (because he is talking to young people) is employing a similar technique in his dialogue with these youths. Suggesting/asking if it is hypocritical that a Christian is involved in the business of weaponry? Is it Christian to be involved in such? So I guess I am more trusting of his encounter with these youths and his pedagogy, then to jump all over his example as a dogmatic proclamation. His comments should be taken in the context – to the audience o whom they are given. Perhaps, he is even struggling with the dichotomy himself and articulating his own confusions and turmoil.

Fundamentally, I just don’t find that Francis in his life, in his example, and in his teachings to be the bogey man that so many on this board are portraying him to be. This is the pontiff who s per his name sake – Francis of Assisi – lives in a modest life in a modest apartment and not in the palatial residence. This is the Pontiff who uses public transportation and walking rather than the Vatican limo.

I would be in an alternate universe, because God’s word says “God’s people will not suffer wrath.”

    • Hope

Of course God’s people will not suffer God’s wrath. They will instead suffer the tribulation of the “man of sin.” Read Revelation, he “makes war with the saints”

  • Hope

This pope does not know what the word “Christian” means. A marriage between the Catholic Church a particular U.S. political party from another country…is evil. Take your political manipulation and shove it! I am a gun owner and I am a born again Christian. If a man could take away my Christianity with simple words, I would not be much of a Christian for sure. However, the words of a mere man with a church on the decline and an obvious agenda is transparent as wet tissue paper.

  • Hope

We are supposed to look the other way on him having the Swiss Army Guard! haha The pope obviously doesn’t understand his own reality or biblical Christianity.

Ummm.. the Pope has never said that Christians cannot own guns or other weapons. He was speaking in both Turin and Congress about the large scale manufacturing and sale of weapons. He wasn’t talking about the rightness or wrongness of individual people owning guns or making guns for this purpose, he was attacking the companies and governments (the US government very much guilty of this) who make huge amounts of money by sending enormous volumes of small-arms as well as other military hardware into volatile areas which directly allows for, promotes and causes the escalation of conflicts, the suffering and murder of innocent people and large scale damage to the fabric of regions and countries.

He was not saying you can’t have a gun, but that it would be gravely wrong to make money by selling guns to dangerous people who you know are going to use them to kill innocents.
