Penguin Swims 5,000 Miles Every Year To Visit Man Who Saved Its Life From Oil Slick

Biologist Joao Paulo Krajewski, who interviewed Mr Pereira de Souza for Globo TV, said: 'I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well. 'When he sees him he wags his tail like a dog and honks with delight.'

Pensioner Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, discovered dying penguin on beach

This incredible video shows the touching relationship between a penguin and the Brazilian man who rescued him from certain death. Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, from an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, discovered the tiny penguin languishing on rocks in 2011.

The helpless creature was starving and covered in oil but Mr de Souza took him in and nursed him back to health, naming the South American Magellanic penguin Dindim.

It took him a week just to clean the sticky black residue from the bird’s feathers. When Dindim was well again Mr de Souza released him back into the sea, never expecting to see his new friend again.

He was astonished when, just a few months later, the penguin returned to the island where he recognised Mr de Souza and returned home with him.

Now, Dindim spends eight months of the year with Mr de Souza and spends the rest of his time breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile. The flightless bird is believed to swim around 5,000 miles every time he returns to Mr de Souza.

‘I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,’ Mr Pereira de Souza told Globo TV.

‘No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.’ Mr Pereira de Souza said he fed Dindim a daily diet of fish to improve his strength then took him back to the sea to let him go.

But he wouldn’t leave, he stayed with me for 11 months and then just after he changed his coat with new feathers he disappeared,’ recalled the retired builder. ‘Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years.

‘He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me.’

Biologist Joao Paulo Krajewski, who interviewed Mr Pereira de Souza for Globo TV, said: ‘I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.

Wonderful. I love animals. They love us with no conditions.

    • Jim

The longer I live, the more connection I feel with animals. They are the most innocent of God’s Creation and this story proves that. I have found faithful companions with animals of all sorts in the last couple decades, even RATS! That’s right, rats. They bond with mankind like they would bond with each other and show a level of affection that could have come from nowhere else but the Hand of Almighty God. With all of the evil and sin of mankind, especially in this age immediately before the return of Jesus Christ, it’s no wonder those of us who know Love seek love in the most innocent and pure places – in the hearts of God’s lovable animals!

      • Bart

Had five rats before, amazing pets. Worse part is that they don’t live for very long, so I’m down to one. But I’m glad I had them. Well worth it.

    • GRACE

Wow, amazing story! I love animals too and these stories never cease to amaze me.

In a world of woe and misfortune, it’s nice to hear a nice story once in a while. Enough of all the bad reports. We should now focus on the good in the world, glorifying our Father in Heaven and be about our Father’s business. Amen or Oh me?

Phil 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

I’m wondering the same thing. It’s good to watch for and speed the coming of our Lord Jesus but there’s some kind of balance.

“For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” = Ecc 1:18

This is why I pray our pets are in heaven. If that man turns out to be a believer, what an amazing eternity it would be to have that remarkable penguin with him forever.

Of course, this is NTEB. Someone will eventually come along and destroy my hope by explaining animals have no soul and then they’ll cite a verse that only serves to rub salt in the wound.

“Of course, this is NTEB. Someone will eventually come along and destroy my hope by explaining animals have no soul…”

You’ve got this site figured out! I vote penguins in heaven, and dogs too!

    • Well, now…I would hate to disappoint you:

“Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?” Ecclesiastes 3:21 (KJV)

      • Anna

        How about this?
It’s Romans chapter 8. I used KJV cause you seem to like it though ot’s difficult for me as English is not my mother tongue. I believe that also the passage from the old testament forbidding Jews to eat blood since it is called its SOUL only proves that somwhere there in God’s glorious plans there’s place for the poor creatures that suffer because of the sin of men. God is good, He’s better than you think. 🙂

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the ado

There are so many scriptures of pets/animals in heaven. Look up rainbow bridge’s website it shows them all! Blessings!

  • PAULA

What a sweet and heartwarming story. We don’t get enough of those.

  • KY

This story sure beats politics 🙂

  • Skywatcher

Wow! Brother Geoffrey, I cannot thank you enough, for giving us a nice breath of fresh air. I love animals so much, and if you folks could see how my German Shepherd loves me, and dotes upon me…it’s almost sickening and spooky by times! I too, believe animals will be in Heaven! After all…Christ comes back riding on a white horse…as do the hosts of Heaven with Him! Horses are mentioned a lot in Rev.

All through Scripture, it is peppered with one animal after another…lions (Christ, the Lion of Judah), unicorns, asses, goats, sheep, etc.

This story makes me homesick for the millennial reign of Christ when all of nature is at rest with each other, as told in Isaiah 65: 25! WOW! What a time to look forward to!

That penguin is something else! Did any of you happen to notice the huge Christian cross on the door of the man’s shed?

    • Well, thank you.. I saw this story today and it really touched my heart. God made the animals, I believe, as a gift to us. And this little penguin just stole my heart. so I figured others would appreciate it as well 🙂

  • Jill

This is the nicest story I’ve heard in a long time. I love animals much more than humans!!. This is way better than the usual hollywood celebrity trash stories… Show your support by only buying cruelty free!!

    • chris johnson

      isaih 11:6
In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.
      A wonderful true story.

    • Skywatcher

Good morning, Jill. You gotta help me out a little, please. I don’t understand what “Show your support by only buying cruelty free!!” means. I’ve never heard that before. Sorry for being so “behind the times”! 🙂

  • Chris

This is a very heartwarming story. I thank God that there is still so much love and good in this fallen world. We know all love and goodness comes from Him. Thank God for creating such amazing creatures. They never cease to amaze us. What an awesome God we serve!

    • Skywatcher

AMEN, Brother Chris! Won’t it be totally mindblowingly awesome in the Millennial Kingdom?!!!! I can hardly wait! I want me a big young adult lion to lay up against, with my dogs by my side! Top that all off with our blessed Lord at the helm, it really cannot get any better than that. Well, I guess it can. It will be fun and satisfying to watch my loved ones all enjoying the same!

      • Joanna

Hello Skywatcher I believe there are animals in Heaven, Jesus rides a white horse, the believers have horses and there are mentions of eagles, including the one in Revelation. Yes I believe there are pets in Heaven including creatures we don’t know and don’t live in this Realm, like the creatures with all the eyes that Praise our Heavenly Father without ceasing…Jesus loves the animals very much and humans are to care for the Earth…I don’t have the animal rights intensity because humans are in God’s image and the animal rights people can be too extreme for me, but I do think mankind has responsibility for the Earth. I am certain you’ll get to cuddle up with the adult lion and he will be playful and sweet…like a kitten…

I like most dogs more than I like most people. I turn to this you-tube site once a day to get a warm fuzzy feeling that society is not all washed up. These vets have set up a non profit organization and make abandoned and “death row” dogs and cats that are injured or sick healthy again and then find them a loving home.

    Please check it out.

I too believe that one day my beloved pets and I will be reunited in heaven.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this story Brother in Christ Jesus-Yeshua Geoffrey!!

Wonderful story of this man too take care of the Animals our True GOD CREATED!!

    Love Always and Shalom,

    Kristi

  • Tusitala

Dear Jesus, bless all the wee creatures…You have such a wonderful imagination, no mortal could ever conceive of a penguin !!!!

  • Skywatcher

I’m seeing a sentiment being expressed where for some, animals have more value than humans. That’s not a healthy set of morals for Christians in particular, to be possessing. Remember, humans are made in God’s image and likeness, whereas animals are not. We need to keep our priorities straight. Don’t forget…I too, am an avid animal lover!

Gone are the days when the most pure and innocent used to be allowed to live among us, giving us a sense of fulfillment, wonder, and joy. We abort them now. They used to be called babies, but now, they are “fetuses” or “fetal tissue”. So sad, that so many place animals over innocent little babies. Once the majority of babies were being killed off, the whole economic and sociologic system began to deteriorate. This is not what our Lord would’ve wanted for them or for us.

  • Ron S

I can’t quote a Bible verse that tells us animals will be in heaven, but one interesting book which I’ve read is entitled “Intramuros” by Rebecca Ruter Springer, who died in 1904. In the book she described her experience in heaven when she died and then returned to her body. In the book she describes how a faithful family dog which had died was there in heaven, and another part where a small girl who died had her beloved kitten with her in heaven. This isn’t “gospel” of course, but I believe that God in his love, who gave us animals to enrich our lives, may well provide us with animals to love in heaven. God bless this kind man and his penguin.

  • carson

Great story! There will be grass and tree’s and more in heaven, and heavenly horses, and hard to imagine that it’ll be horses only. No verses say so beyond horses which Christ and His army returns seated upon (rev 19) but hard to imagine there won’t be other heavenly animals anyway. It’s not an issue either way, heaven will be the most wonderful. A bigger issue in today’s age is to make sure and NOT step into the worlds path where animals are of more value then people!

  • Pelicancat

What a wonderful story. It is so nice to hear! 🙂 Glad for the both of him. Thank you for helping your penguin friend!

  • Karen

Thank you for the happy story Geoffrey. I think it is a good thing to post some happy things in the midst of the world’s woes. It lightens the heart.

Yes animals are in Heaven. Let’s view God with common sense and the scriptures. Would GOD make mankind and plants, trees, flowers and they were in heaven with us, but not his creatures(animals)? In the last few chapters of Psalms it speaks of animals praising GOD. Would GOD make something that praises him and knows their creator but banish them from the Kingdom of Heaven? Why do you thing birds sing? And they all have different voices. They are God’s Choir here on earth. Some humans think that an animal has no soul because they don’t have to be “SAVED”. We sinned (man), not the animals. They are innocent. They have souls or they would not love, play, show loyalty, grieve, etc. They just don’t have to turn from sin and find Jesus like we do. There are also other places in the bible, including revelations that talk of animals in Heaven. The old testament speaks of the mill.kingdom with animals living at peace together. Doubt they wil make it to the Mill. and not proceed on to the New Kingdom. Only someone stuck on themselves would think an animal doesn’t have a soul and will not be in Heaven. I even read some article by a Rapture writer/thealogian once – claiming that some animals may be in Heaven, but no way all of them could be because Heaven won’t be big enough. The only thing measured in the Revelation is the New Jerusaleum. We have no idea out vast the Heavens will be on the other side of eternity. Let’s not put GOD in a box. He’s the creator, not us. He decides who or what is in Heaven. And I am 100% positive I’ll see plenty of animals there.

    • Skywatcher

PREACH IT, SS! I’m in your camp! The only difference between and animal and a human is that they do not have a soul, but possess a spirit, that part which makes them alive. The soul is the mind, will, intellect, and emotions.
My dog has some serious emotions; some intellect, and a strong will at times! We are told animals lack conscience, but I would have to strongly disagree, as mine dogs over the years have shown plenty of conscience when they have done wrong. They hang their heads, don’t wag the tail, pout, and act like children caught with their hand in the cookie jar. I think this “animals act out of instinct” idea has been carried too far, and too many people have adopted it, Christians included.

I don’t know how one would determine if an animal has a soul or not; they’ve never been an animal to prove either way. The same applies to whether or not animals can see color. I don’t care what kind of scientific equipment there is out there! Just because various components work the way WE PERCEIVE they do, doesn’t really mean they do! 🙂 You have just “preached” a message I’ve been preaching for years! AMEN!

God’s priority in Genesis was to tell man how he got here and how we messed up, and that there would be a Savior coming, etc. God wasn’t concerned with revealing everything about the rest of creation, because Christ wasn’t coming to die for them…or was HE? Rom. 8: 22…

Where there is no law, they cannot be held accountable for sin. Rom. 5: 13. Animals cannot understand the law; they are innocent as little children are! Could this be applied to them? I believe so! Yippeeeeee!
