Oceanographer Matthew Maury Discovered Ocean Currents By Believing The King James Bible

Matthew Maury devoted himself to studying the winds, clouds, weather, and ocean features ... as well as the Bible. In his Bible studies, the words of Psalm 8 stuck in his mind: ‘ ... whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas’. Maury determined that if God’s Word said there were ‘paths’ in the seas, then there must be paths. So he set out to find them.

American naval officer and oceanographer Matthew Maury was a Christian who loved reading his King James Bible. He also had no doubts about its accuracy. And these facts led him to some remarkable discoveries in science.

“The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:8,9 (KJV)

Maury entered the US Navy in 1825, but an accident in 1839 partially disabled him, so he left active sea duty. Three years later, still with the Navy, he was appointed superintendent of the US Naval Observatory in Washington, and also of the US Depot of Charts and Instruments.

Over the next 19 years Maury devoted himself to studying the winds, clouds, weather, and ocean features … as well as the Bible. In his Bible studies, the words ofPsalm 8 stuck in his mind: ‘ … whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas’.

Maury determined that if God’s Word said there were ‘paths’ in the seas, then there must be paths. So he set out to find them.

He studied old ships’ logs. From these he compiled charts of ocean-wind and sea currents. To study the speed and direction of the ocean currents Maury set adrift weighted bottles known as ‘drift bottles’. These floated slightly below the surface of the water, and thus were not affected by wind. Instructions were sealed in each bottle directing anyone who found one washed ashore to return it. From the location and date on which the bottles were found, Maury was able to develop his charts of the ocean currents—the ‘paths’ of the seas—which greatly aided the science of marine navigation.

“To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.” Job 28:25 (KJV)

In 1855, Maury wrote the first textbook on modern oceanography, The Physical Geography of the Sea and Its Meteorology. In this work, Maury presented oceanography from a delightfully Christian view. He included Biblical passages of meteorological and other scientific importance, such as the Scripture quote from the book of Job (28:25) which refers to God’s making ‘the weight for the winds’. He explained the Biblical statement this way:

‘. . though the fact that the air has weight is here so distantly announced [in Job], philosophers never recognized the fact until within comparatively a recent period, and then it was proclaimed by them as a great discovery. Nevertheless, the fact was set forth as distinctly in the book of nature as it is in the book of revelation; for the infant, in availing itself of atmospherical pressure to draw milk from its mother’s breast, unconsciously proclaimed it.’

Maury subsequently prepared charts of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean between the United States and Europe, which showed the practicability of laying undersea cables. Maury died in 1873. He was elected to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans.

A monument erected in his honour on Monument Avenue, Richmond, Virginia, reads: ‘Matthew Fontaine Maury, Pathfinder of the Seas, the genius who first snatched from the oceans and atmosphere the secret of their laws. His inspiration, Holy Writ,Psalm 8:8; Ecclesiastes 1:6.’

“The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.” Ecclesiastes 1:6 (KJV)

It is often claimed that the Bible is not a scientific textbook. Yet the Bible’s accuracy when touching on scientific subjects has led many great scientists, including Matthew Maury, to some outstanding scientific discoveries. source

  • The Scriptures are so full of then undiscovered science as to be astoundingly flabbergasting.
When Buzz Aldrin + Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11 fame on 7/20/1969 stepped on the surface of the Moon the first thing they did was to take Communion and read Jesus’s words from John 15:5.
Thesectwo Americans were seeing the Earth suspended in space as was shown to Job 4,100 yrs ago as seen in Job Chapter 26: 7.
This one verse alone is enough to awaken any critical thinker as to the hand of God inspiring Scripture, tho there are many more ~!

Thank you for such an uplifting post! The Bible is an amazing, supernatural entity. Consistent study yields priceless treasures!

  • avidtrober

Geoffrey, you’re fanstastic being a witness for Jesus Christ.

But, please pray about this King James Version stuff.

The fact is there are a lot of good translations and it is best to use at least three with something like Strong’s Concordance to get to the word meanings (for those studies to which it applies. The fact is, the essence of scripture is not lost in any earnest translation. Some could be better, but again, a bible study is best with at least three translations for word meanings when it applies.

    • Ahh yes, the old “King James Stuff”…God’s preserved word. And as far as all those other “good translations” go, help yourself 🙂 I gave them up for Lent.

“Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?” Ecclesiastes 8:4 (KJV)

  • Ben

The King James is not the preserved word of God. The Greek and Hebrew texts are. The King James comes directly from these proof texts.

I agree that the King James is a good translation, but it is only a translation.

  • Ben

I’m unsure why the King James Version is gods preserved word. It is a teanslation of the Greek and Hebrew texts. Doesn’t this make the original texts the preserved word. Especially given they actually have been preserved for thousands of years.

The King James is a good translation, better than most, but not the only good translation.

Why then do serious students always go to the original Greek and Hebrew?

  • Deborah

Geoffrey, thanks for that inspiring story you posted. It is wonderful to reflect on such inspirations.

  • Ben

Geoffrey, seems you are starting to cull my posts, seems a big jump to make. I’m unsure why you continually ignore my posts, and don’t respond to the bible verses I raise.

I really do hope you take the time to listen to the following link:

  • He was my (3RD I believe) great grandfather on my mothers’ side. My brother who’s middle name is Maury still bears his name in the family. ; )

  • Aussie ben

Please explain to me how the King James is the preserved word when it is a translation of the Greek and Hebrew texts.

Aren’t the original texts the preserved word, given they have been preserved for thousands of years?

The King James is a good translation, but it is only a translation. Why in the study of theology do we continually go back to the Greek and Hebrew to confirm exactly what the text is saying?

    • Ron

Aussie ben because so many people want The Bible to say what they want it to, so to back up the proper context and interpretation

the original Greek and Hebrew are referenced like a dictionary to make the proper context and interpretation.

  • Ben

Wow, all my posts show up a once, sorry for the repetition

  • Ben

Why then does Geoffrey continue to be so dogmatic about kjv onlyism. It is only a translation of the original texts, it is not THE original preserved text.

Why no response from Geoffrey, why the crickets. If you are continually going to make such rhetorical statements, at least back up your reasons.

    • Ron

It is his choice to do such Ben, it is his Website and he insists on the King James Version. Geoffrey I believe has another Job and sometimes he

cannot get on here to respond like he wants to. If a person doesn’t stand for something then they will likely fall for anything.

So that is the only reason I can give you because I already stand on The KJV Bible so I have no arguments with it.

People try and tell me it is too hard to read, I say hog wash to that The Holy Spirit can illuminate anyone to understand it who is saved.

That is all I can tell you. I have had crickets with him before too, He also has a street ministry which is more important than NTEB.

Leading souls to Jesus Christ is his number one priority.

This is the address to The Blue Letter Bible, it has many useful tools as well………

      Have a Nice Evening Ben!
