Ambassador Chris Stevens was a ‘bump in the road’ according to Obama

President Barack Obama referred to recent events in the Middle East, including violent attacks on embassies and the terrorist murder of a US ambassador and three other Americans, as ‘bumps in the road’.

Bumps in the road: The President said the killing of ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Libya was some of the ‘bumps in the road’ along the ‘rocky path’ to Middle Eastern peace

The comment came in Obama’s CBS ’60 Minutes’ interview that aired on Sunday night.

Steve Kroft, the interviewer, asked: ‘Have the events that took place in the Middle East, the recent events in the Middle East given you any pause about your support for the governments that have come to power following the Arab Spring?

Obama responded: ‘Well, I’d said even at the time that this is going to be a rocky path. The question presumes that somehow we could have stopped this wave of change.

‘I think it was absolutely the right thing for us to do to align ourselves with democracy, universal rights — a notion that people have to be able to participate in their own governance.

‘But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because, you know, in a lot of these places, the one organizing principle has been Islam.’

Ambassador Chris Stevens died of apparent asphyxiation at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi after an attack launched under the cover of a demonstration against a crude, low-budget anti-Islam movie mad ein California.

Sean Smith, another diplomat, and former U.S. Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods were also killed.

Republicans leapt on Obama’s ‘bumps in the road’ comment. Ari Fleischer, former press secretary to President George W. Bush said on Twitter: ‘I guess when u win a Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing “an attack that kills an Ambassador is just a ‘bump in the road.’

The Obama administration initially insisted the attack was a spontaneous result of anger about the movie and had nothing to do with al-Qaeda or U.S. policy in the region. source – Daily Mail

  • I watched the interview; I was insulted by the Liar-in-Chief’s comments. I was most interested in his physical response when the questions turned to the Middle East uprisings: Obama had been looking right at Steve Kroft throughout all the questions until this point. When the Middle East came up, Obama started to blink rapidly, shifted his gaze, looking left and right, looked back at Kroft, looked down, etc. He was maaaaaad! and lying. As a mother and a long-time teacher, I know a lying response when I see one. The “bumps in the road” comment gave us an insight into how little value Obama places on American lives. The physical reaction I saw gave me great insight into the liar-in-chief. (No capitals out of lack of respect.)

  • Are we sure that this man has a heart? Why would you call those 4 dead men “bumps in the road”? I am sure they are more than that to the rest of the country and especially their families. Does this man care for nothing but looking good to his minions? Obama is a dismal failure as our leader and as a human being.

  • obama sucks

    Enough said.

  • One, Two, Three,
    Ahead of me,
I think you say it all.

    May we survive,
    His lying jive,
    And survive the fall.

  • How heartless can one man be?His reactions to the question was NOT how the American people feel,it makes me angry that someone in as high of office can make such a cold hearted statement.Maybe we should close all of our embassies in the middle east, get our people home and show that movie in every theater in America, stand by and watch those people hurt each other then we won’t have to worry about losing any more American lives because of people that worship the quran.Islam and the quran are the seed of the devil.

  • Would Obama view himself as just “a bump in the road”, if he were to be brutally sodomized and murdered?

  • The ambassador’s family must be heartsick at this comment. I know I am.

My heartfelt prayers are for all the American families of our four fallen ” heroes “. May all four rest in peace. I also pray for America.

  • the insensitivity of this usurper is astounding. he should have been arrested already for dereliction of duty when he was given news before the attacks and decided his sleep was more important. And for him to call the deaths of the Americans “bumps in the road” just verifies this.

  • |There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
