Navy Halts Move To Allow Gay Unions By Chaplains

NTEB was one of the first to bring you the story of the Navy allowing same-sex marriages on naval bases in states where gay union was allowed. Well, it seems that now that the story has gotten some notice, that a lot of people really don’t think it’s a good idea. I guess that’s one of the main reason we run stories like this.

“WASHINGTON — Under pressure from more than five dozen House lawmakers, the Navy late Tuesday abruptly reversed its decision that would have allowed chaplains to perform same-sex unions if the Pentagon decides to recognize openly gay military service later this year.

In a one-sentence memo obtained by The Associated Press, Rear Adm. Mark Tidd, chief of Navy chaplains, said his earlier decision has been “suspended until further notice pending additional legal and policy review and interdepartmental coordination.”

The Navy said its lawyers wanted to do a more thorough review of the legal decision that allowed Navy chaplains to receive training to perform civil unions on military bases, but only in states where it is legal

Military training to apply the new law allowing gays to serve openly began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by midsummer.

House members wrote to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to object to the Navy’s initial ruling, saying the service was violating the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act by appearing to recognize and support same-sex marriages.

That law defines marriage as only between a man and a woman, and it also says states don’t have to recognize gay marriages performed in other states where they are legal.

“We find it unconscionable that the United States Navy, a federal entity sworn to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States, believes it is their place alone to train and direct service members to violate federal law,” said the lawmakers’ letter, which was signed by 63 House members.” source – MSNBC

  • The boys in those photos are adorable. How can you hate faces like that?

    • You mean disgusting, right? Christians don’t hate gays (real Christians, I mean), but they do hate homosexuality. It is an abomination, absolutely disgusting, and it has been proven that while the std rate for heterosexuals has started to level out the std rate for homosexuals continues to skyrocket because the only avenue for intercourse between homosexuals is only ONE CELL THICK. Coincidence? I think not! Because that’s how God made us… to not engage in such filthy and disgusting activities. That avenue is meant to be a one-way road. Get it straight and check out the facts instead of being (I’m guessing) a female with sexual issues.

  • Actually no I’m a homosexual man. Sex is sex. Everybody can get the same diseases from sex, and by the way gay men are not the only ones who have anal sex. Heterosexuals have it too, and in fact a lot of so called “Christian” kids have anal sex instead because they think that way they’re still virgins.

STD’s and HIV are rampant in most of Africa. Is that because they’re all engaging in filthy and disgusting activities? Diseases don’t have a moral agenda.

You know, gay people can and do have just as healthy and loving relationships as anybody else. There’s just as many heterosexuals that are promiscuous. In my line of work people come to me with their very intimate issues. I can tell you that everybody does the same things. Straight people cheat on each other, have kinky sex, get diseases, etc. And by the way there’s a lot of people having gay sex that are supposedly straight, are married, and are in your community. Yours. I’ve counseled a lot of very serious christians, including evangelicals from places like Texas, who are married and having gay relationships in secret. That’s why Jesus doesn’t want us to throw the first stones. You don’t know what’s in someone’s heart, and you don’t always know the truth.

    • The Bible says that all homosexuals will have their place in the lake of fire, Hell. It is very simple, cut and dry. In addition, you’re totally ignoring my point and taking it in a completely different direction. I don’t care about what other people are doing that are living in sin. The mere fact of the matter that I was bringing up in my point is the only way for gay people to have full-out intercourse is anal sex which is how stds are transmitted most easily. I believe anal sex PERIOD is a sin, even amonst a heterosexual married couple. Homosexuality is an abomination according to the Bible. If the Bible didn’t say it, I wouldn’t have an opinion on the matter, but the Bible is clear, and as such, my opinion is clear. I stand on what the Bible clearly says, and if you claim to be a Christian while being gay, then you need to stop clinging to what you WANT to believe and realize what the Bible actually says. Stop making excuses and repent, please, for your own sake. I say this only for your sake, not out of hatred for gays, but out of concern for your eternal salvation. As far as the military goes, I think that the military, ESPECIALLY the Navy, is too close quarters for many straight Christians to be comfortable serving alongside people they KNOW are gay, but even more importantly, for chaplains, who are supposed to be military ministers of God, to be forced to perform unholy unions of people who are living in sin is absolutely sick. While I hope you will repent of your homosexual lifestyle, here is my ultimate perspective on the issue: if a minister wishes to forsake God and instead seek to please the world by agreeing to wed a marriage of sin that is a “gay union,” let that be on their own heads; but if a chaplain would be FORCED AGAINST HIS WILL AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS to wed someone who he believes is living in a grievous sin and should not be wed, how is that fair! It is an absolutely heinous violation of that chaplain’s rights to serve God as he believes. You talk about rights and freedom, but you only seek it for yourselves! You don’t care at all about the rights and freedoms of those who disagree with you. THAT is the problem! If you want to live in sin, that’s on you… but when you start to seek the persecution of those whom disagree with the homosexual agenda, THAT is when there is a problem. You tell us not to cast the first stone… while here I am to let you know that it is GAYS AND THE LIBERAL AGENDA who has waged a war against Christians with conservative, BIBLICAL values.

  • How has anyone waged war against you? Nobody is saying you can’t worship however you like or believe however you like. You can think I’m going to hell. That’s fine! I respect your right to believe that as long as you don’t interfere in my right to live my life the way I do. I’m not hurting anybody else! How would gay marriage affect you? Do you even know any gay people? Why is it that you’re focusing on how gay men have sex? What about lesbians? Do you follow EVERY SINGLE law put forth in the Bible? The first mention of homosexuality is in Leviticus, which is ancient Jewish law. Do you obey all those laws? How about women not being allowed to leave their house during menstruation? Not eating shellfish? Do you believe adulterers should be stoned? In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah they were raping others and having sex with children. Who is to say what the most grievous sin is that led God to destroy the city? The other passages about homosexuality are in the Letters of the Apostles. As far as I know none of those books contain Law. They’re mostly about the establishment of the Church, which by the way was the Catholic church so, I guess if you’re not Catholic you’re also disobeying God’s laws if you believe the Bible so literally.

Jesus didn’t talk about homosexuality and one of his closest followers was a prostitute. Jesus warned against condemning and judging others. Who are you to declare that I’m going to hell, or that anyone else is? People can cite scripture to mean just about anything they want, so how do you know that you’re the one that has the perfect interpretation. Do you even know any gay people? I’m not a Christian and don’t literally believe in God but i was raised Catholic and still believe that the teachings of JESUS have powerful lessons that COULD save the world if people actually listened to his true message, which is to love one another as he loved his disciples, to take care of the sick and the poor, and not to judge those who you think of as ‘sinners’ because you also have sin in your heart and it is for God to judge us.

If we actually followed the teachings of Christ and of most religions we’d live together in peace, but fundamentalists use scripture to justify bigotry, violence, and their political agendas. Why do you think that you, as a fundamentalist Christian, are any better than a fundamentalist Muslim? Fundamentalism is inherently dangerous and misleading because you cannot take an ancient text literally and try to apply it to today’s world. If you did, you’d have to believe that the sun revolves around the earth and that it’s ok to own slaves.
