Tennessee Lawmakers Vote To Make The Bible The State’s Official Book

Opponents argued the Bible would be trivialized by being placed alongside other state symbols such as the official tree, flower, rock or amphibian. But both chambers of the Legislature brushed aside those concerns to send the bill to the desk of Republican Gov. Bill Haslam. He opposes the measure but hasn’t said whether he’ll issue a veto.

Having already made a .50-caliber sniper gun the official state rifle, Tennessee lawmakers on Monday gave final approval to making the Holy Bible the state’s official book.

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Psalm 138:2 (KJV)

The state Senate voted 19-8 in favor of the bill despite arguments by the state attorney general that the measure conflicts with a provision in the Tennessee Constitution stating that “no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.”

Republican Sen. Steve Southerland argued that his bill is aimed at recognizing the Bible for its historical and cultural contributions to the state, rather than as government endorsement of religion.

Democratic Sen. Jeff Yarbro questioned why the legislation highlights the economic impact of Bible publishing in the state, or that Bibles were traditionally used to track family histories. “I don’t think that’s why we read the Bible, I don’t think that’s why we send our kids to vacation Bible school,” Yarbro said. “To those of us who grew up in this faith, it is so much more.”

In solidly Republican Tennessee, heavy doses of God and guns are considered reliable election-year politics.

The Bible bill came to a vote just days before the candidate filing deadline, giving lawmakers pause about being portrayed by political rivals as being opposed to the Bible if they voted against the bill.

Earlier this session, the Legislature approved a resolution to add the .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifle to the state’s official symbols. The Murfreesboro-based company run by a prominent Republican supporter, Ronnie Barrett, supplies its firearms to law enforcement agencies, private citizens and more than 70 militaries around the world.

Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee, called on Haslam to veto the Bible bill. She called it a “thinly veiled effort to promote one religion over other religions [that] clearly violates both the United States and Tennessee Constitutions.”

Southerland said an outside legal organization has offered to defend any lawsuits challenging the bill for free.

“So I ask you, what do we have to lose?” he said. source

T-TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! Congratulations, Tennessee! Totally unbelievable! Sure wish I could leave Canada and move to your state! It’s readily apparent the males down there are intact! I have never heard of such a thing before, and the arguments for it are phenomenal. In fact, it should be the Book of the Nation, seeing that N. America’s hospitals, orphanages, social services, many corporations, etc., were built upon the tenants of the Holy Bible.

As for Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee, let’s see how loudly she crows when Islam threatens to take away ALL HER religious rights and freedoms, and she has to bow down and kiss the ground to a god who sees her as nothing more than a dog! She’ll want to run to the mountains to hide then; her mouth won’t be big enough to hide in at that time! Congrats, TN!

    • Tracy

      Amen, James Staten!!

  • At first I was a little confused and sided with the governor, thinking it was a bit trite and demeaning–at best a meaningless gesture for the purposes of pandering to the constituency. But upon consideration, based upon the criteria that it is the work of literature that has had the most influence on the political and social makeup of the state it seems entirely Constitutional and a good choice. Having said that, Tennessee is called the “Volunteer State” because it was torn in half, father from son, brother from brother, to fight both in roughly equal numbers both for the North and the Confederacy in one of the bloodiest civil wars in human history. Inasmuch as the Bible was the singular source of that conflict, it would be hard to argue against it’s prime position as a book of supreme influence in Tennessee, or any other state of the Union for that matter.

    Wonderful news! Praise The Lord!
Now our law makers need to read the Holy Bible too…after all, our laws are based on The Ten Commandments…
Many atheists say the Holy Bible had no influence on law-making in the distant past but I disagree…both our Nations (USA and UK) have Christian history, despite what we are now told in the classrooms…

Tennessee is the state to live in!

  • Tusitala

This is wonderful. The Bible has become so dear to me, I cannot imagine what I did without its Truth and guidance. Dear Jesus, thank You for those who have the strength, the bravery and the faith to stand up for You and face the evil forces in this fallen world despite the threat of persecution and trouble.

Gee maybe I’ll consider moving to Tennessee when retirement approaches, which is pretty soon. Imagine a state that is not afraid to be politically incorrect and take a stand against the leftist forces a la Soros which are planning wars on persons and/or states that do not follow their leftist agenda.
