Science or the Bible?

Ever heard one of these claims? Perhaps you've even said one yourself. Over the years, we've heard them all-but they're all false, or at least they imply a falsehood.

Common claims by non-Christians:

"Science proves the Bible is wrong."

"Evolution is science, but the Bible is religion."

"Evolutionists believe in science, but creationists reject science."

Common claims by Christians:

"I believe the Bible over science."

"Creation is religion, but evolution is religion, too."

"Creationists believe in the Bible and reject science."

The Bible's account of beginnings cannot be tested in a laboratory, so secular scientists-and even some Christians-believe it is not science and must be classified as religion.

Secular scientists claim that their view of beginnings (evolution) can be tested in a laboratory, so their view is scientific. For instance, they point to mutated fruit flies or speciation observed in the field (such as new species of mosquitoes or fish).

But this is where many people are confused-what is meant by "science" or "scientific."

Before we get caught up in a debate about whether the Bible or evolution is scientific, we have learned to ask, "Could you please define what you mean by science?" The answer usually reveals where the real problem lies.

Defining Science

People are generally unaware that dictionaries give a root meaning, or etymology, of science similar to this one from Webster's: "from Latin scientia, from scient-, sciens 'having knowledge,' from present participle of scire 'to know.'"

And most dictionaries give the following meaning of the word: "the state of knowing: knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding."

Although there are other uses of the word, the root meaning of science is basically "knowledge." In fact, in the past, philosophy and theology were considered sciences, and theology was even called the "queen of the sciences."

But over the past 200 years, during the so-called Scientific Revolution, the word science has come to mean a method of knowing, a way of discovering truth. Moreover, many people assume that modern science is the only way to discover truth.

Proven Facts

Let us be clear. Accurate knowledge (truth) about physical reality can be discovered by the methods of both operation science and origin science. But truth claims in both areas may be false. Many "proven facts" (statements of supposed truth) about how things operate (in physics, chemistry, medicine, etc.), as well as about how things originated (in biology, geology, astronomy, etc.) have been or will be shown to be false. So, as best we can, we must be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11 and examine every truth claim against Scripture and look for faulty logic or false assumptions.

Parting of the Red Sea Agrees With Natural Laws
Proof Of Winds Strong Enough To Part The Red Sea

"Mother Earth could have parted the Red Sea, hatching the great escape described in the biblical book of Exodus, a new study finds.A strong east wind, blowing overnight, could have swept water off a bend where an ancient river is believed to have merged with a coastal lagoon along the Mediterranean Sea, said study team member Carl Drews of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. A strong east wind, blowing overnight, could have swept water off a bend where an ancient river is believed to have merged with a coastal lagoon along the Mediterranean Sea, said study team member Carl Drews of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. While archaeologists and Egyptologists have found little evidence that any events described in Exodus actually happened, the study outlines a perfect storm that could have led to the 3,000-year-old escape. "People have always been fascinated by this Exodus story, wondering if it comes from historical facts," Drews said. "What this study shows is that the description of the waters parting indeed has a basis in physical laws." Drew and his colleagues used models that showed that a wind of 63 mph (101 kph), lasting for 12 hours, would have pushed back waters estimated to be 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep. This would have exposed mud flats for four hours, creating a dry passage about 2 to 2.5 miles (3.2 to 4 kilometers) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide. To match the account in the Bible, the water would have to be pushed back into both the lake and the channel of the river, creating barriers of water on both the lake and the channel of the river, creating barriers of water on both sides of newly exposed mud flats, which is exactly what the models show could have happened." source - Our Amazing Planet

Proof that the bible is true is everywhere

Did you get a churckle, as I did, at how this story began? That "mother earth" could have parted the Red Sea? The universe, and the earth, are simply part of the incredible creation that the Lord God has created for us. But what is great about this story is that it shows that there is so much proof in the world of the truth of the bible, that even scientists who deny God are forced at times to see that there is evidence for the proof of these things. The bible also instructs us on how everything started, like this -

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Genesis 1: 1-3

There is no "mother nature" who has power , but Nature, that God created, is imbued with some of the most awesome power ever conceived. Let's take a look at the biblical account of Moses and the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea.

God traps the children of Israel at the Red Sea, or did He?

"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They [are] entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I [am] the LORD. And they did so." Exodus 14: 1-4

So here we have the story of how God allowed Moses and the children of Israel to do something which would seem pretty stupid to our modern-day military planners. He allowed them to be "trapped" between Pharaoh's rapidly-advancing armies and the Red Sea. But the bible tells us that "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness." I Corinthians 3:19. And that is exactly what God had in mind for Pharaoh, taking him in by Pharaoh's own craftiness.

Pharaoh takes it on the chin, lights out

"And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness [to them], but it gave light by night [to these]: so that the one came not near the other all the night. ¶ And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go [back] by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry [land], and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry [ground]: and the waters [were] a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, [even] all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen." Exodus 14: 19-23

God must be so relieved that science now says the parting of the Red Sea by wind was possible.

The wind doth blow, and blow...all night long

I think it's awesome that the writer of the Red Sea story at top of this page has safely concluded that it is indeed possible for a strong wind to blow all night long with enough strength to actually cause the water of the Red Sea to part long enough for the children of Israel to walk across on dry land. And I also like the charts, graphs and fancy computer computations they used to figure it out. But guess what? Lovers of God's Word already knew that by faith, just like we know that everything in the bible is 100% true and trustworthy.

The last book of the bible, Revelation, was written in 96 AD. Here we are now in 2010 AD. It's nice to see science is catching up with what God has already revealed 2,000 years ago.
