¶ Globalization and Jihad, Like Oil and Water:Can They Ever Mix? By Stella Lohmann • April 9, 2010
Globalization is "when goods, services, and capital flow freely across U.S. borders, Americans can take full advantage of the opportunities of the international marketplace. They can buy the best or least expensive goods and services the world has to offer; they can sell to the most promising markets; they can choose among the best investment opportunities; and they can tap into the worldwide pool of capital. Study after study has shown that countries
that are more open to the global economy grow faster and achieve higher incomes than those that are relatively closed." So why would any country resist globalization? (Cato Institute '10)
Jihad is derived from the Arabic language and defined by Webster as "a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty; also: a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline 2: a crusade for a principle or belief." (Jihad, 2010)
In a world that is changing exponentially in every aspect of living, there is clash between not only global business and world politics but also addressing ensuing religious issues. Can globalization thrive in the midst of a 'holy war' that embraces strict human behavior; holds distain for western capitalism as a threat to its political, religious and cultural
purity; and mandates personal discipline and 'salvation' by 'believers' to establish 'equality' to honor their God? Is it a West versus the East of parallel ways of thinking and living?
Or are these two points of view reconcilable toward mutually enduring prosperity even toward the end of world peace?
Death to America
Today the Middle Eastern nation of Iran's quest to gain nuclear capabilities has dominated national security. Why have prior acts of diplomacy, sanctions, and even appeasement been scoffed at? The problem may lie in a cultural,
political and religious misunderstanding of diametrically opposing goals--Peace, Equality, and Salvation. Refusing to
define these could be the undoing on not only globalization but Obama's 'politics of defeat' by an atomic enemy.
What would happen to business not only here but in every country of the world if nuclear war broke out? Who
would care about what kind of healthcare is offered or not offered by the government or what the unemployment
rate is on any given day? After decades of taking American hostages, burning Ole Glory in the streets, and decrying "Death to America!"--Iran is on the verge of fulfilling its goal of obtaining full nuclear capabilities. Yet this issue has taken back seat to headlines on healthcare, the economy and energy debates on talk shows, internet blogs and social networks. It's not a topic that is easily addressed without someone taking offense or stating its complexity or impact simplistically.
Included in this paper are sources from national news agencies, New York Times best- selling authors, national and international experts on Jihad, government experts speaking before the Senate, the Koran, the Bible and a film maker whose recent movie was the inspiration to examine this issue for this essay. The tension, protests, debate, and
ethics-violations of the past year cut across both party lines in Washington and has made for some very irritated
(but now much more informed citizens). With the resurgence toward reading America's founding
documents and consequently becoming more involved politically in government accountability, many are interested in the issues of globalization but they want to pursue them under a banner of safety from nuclear weapons.
What lies ahead can be more effectively addressed with a deeper and more honest understanding that religion
is politics in the mind of Jihadists and they are focused on fulfilling their mission with patience and vengeance.
The clock is ticking...
What if I told you that it's possible to bring America to its knees as a nation, as a global economic and military power without a country ever setting foot on its soil or smuggling weapons of mass destruction across its borders?
Would you believe it?
Would you even listen to why that could happen? Many Americans and those around the world are perhaps more focused and more fearful of where their next paycheck will come from and if they can make ends meet to pay their mortgages and basic needs than about global
economic stability much less a country who has been calling the U.S. "The Great Satan".
Liberty and Tyranny
In the meantime, there is a clock ticking. It is the clock that some say will run out when this rogue nation acquires its goal of nuclear weapons. Iran throughout history has pitted itself against not only the United States but any western nation that would seemingly dare to control its people, culture, or government. Today it is at the center of urgent talks at the United Nations and here at home, but why aren't Americans alarmed?
Perhaps it is because no one truly understands the cultural differences in the meaning of the words being used like peace, salvation and equality. To the westerner these are noble words with noble causes worthy of embracing. But words aren't always what they seem to mean cross culturally, even ideologically as cautioned by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864:
We all declare for liberty, but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some, the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others the same words mean for some men to as they please with other men and the product of other men's labor.
Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name--liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible name--liberty and tyranny." ~Abraham Lincoln, as found in Liberty and Tyranny by Mark Levin
So herein is the dilemma. How can you recognize and contend with an enemy's advances if you can't define what they look like, act like and aim to achieve? The Koran is the holy document of Islam, the guidelines to behavior, societal rule, and mandates for purification internally and collectively. The Koran divides mankind into two camps: Dar la Islam or territory under Islam believers' control, and Dar a Islam or territory not controlled by Islamic rule better known as War Lands. The world is black and white to them. (Gilbert, 2010)
In his 2009 United Nations speech in New York City, Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad said, "Unbelief is one nation. We will conquer the tops of the world. We can become the invincible global power of the world!"
In1979, Iran, the undisputed leader of Islam and a grassroots movement began claiming that Islam was the solution. True Islamists do not consider themselves revolutionaries but rather those who strive to reestablish the prior strength
of Islam over its 300 years of decline. They are the guardians of their past, a time before western civilization came to their lands and disrupted their golden era of fine goods, gems, and cultural richness. Hundreds of years ago, Islam had conquered much of Asia, North Africa up to Istanbul (which was known before its conquest as Constantinople. Thus began the nation of Islam. (Atomic Jihad, 2010)
The Muslims fought off the Crusades by Christians following the Renaissance, an era of awakening. But they could not stop what
would occur as western Europe replaced religion for nationalism as its mission for expansion to other continents furthering its cultural
exchanges and scope of trade. Muslims found western culture as an affront to the Holy Koran's mandates for behavior and their way of life.
Over centuries, Muslims had ruled over the Dhimis, the Christians and Jews, who were considered inferior and unequal to believers of Islam. Using the Covenant of Ummah, both believers (Muslims) and
non-believers could coexist as long as the Christians or Jews agreed to pay a 'tribute tax'. "Peace" in this case was the absence of conflict because the nonbelievers are virtually slaves and will never gain 'equality' since they did not recognize Muhammad as God.
The Dhimi system was harsh. It punished any oppression of rules to demonstrate absolute supremacy. A Karaj or land tax was imposed in addition to a Jizgah or a public tax. Non believers had to wear a sign or receipt around their neck. Laws did not respect non believers. They could not hold public office; their houses had to be smaller, and dhimis could not ride camels but had to use donkeys or walk on foot to show respect. (Atomic Jihad, 2010)
"Throughout history Islam has demonstrated religious tolerance and equality." These were the words from (President Barack) Obama's mouth at the same United Nations speech just last year. Is he reading the same Koran? Is he in tune with the fundamental driving forces of Islam?
"I have known Islam on three continents. As a boy, son of an Indonesian father where I heard the call at the break of dawn and the fall of dusk ... (Ramadan) is a festive time of intense devotion and reflection. (That's why at work American Muslims can fulfill Zach a (a tax given by all but the very poor to ensure equality)...We honor Islam's role in advancing justice, tolerance, and peace." (White House, 2009)
Does the President not realize that the word equality carries with it a label of inequality and inferiority to those who are not Muslims no matter what country they live in? Islamic equality, tolerance, and peace are one sided. Remember President Lincoln's words defining the differences in meaning of the word 'freedom'--one enslaves and one sets free
the individual. Historically Islam has taken captives and territories through bloodshed and horrific acts of extermination such as in the case of Armenians who demanded rights and collaborated with westerners in the late 1800's in order to get them from an unresponsive government. Expulsion was expected for aligning themselves with non believers but what ensued was a mass extermination with 'no regard to age or sex or conscious'. (Atomic Jihad 2010)
"The regime of Sultan Abdul Hamid II viewed such outside "intervention" as a threat to its sovereignty, and responded
in 1896 with a massive campaign of killing, in which at least 200,000 Armenians died... in February 1915 that "if this purge is not general and final, it will inevitably lead to problems. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to eliminate the Armenian people in its entirety, so that there is no further Armenian on this earth and the very concept of Armenia is extinguished." (Genocide Watch, 2002)
In Washington, D. C. recently Simon Deng, Elisabeth Saadistsch-Wolff, and Lt. Colonel Allen West were among six panelists to speak at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference). The session was The session was scheduled at the same time as key note speakers in the main ballroom but still there was standing room only for the session, Jihad: The Political Third Rail--What They Aren't Telling You?
Deng was kidnapped and enslaved as a child by Muslims in Sudan and now is a human rights Christian activist. "Jihad is part of slavery in Sudan...Christians are being enslaved and murdered under Sharia law"
Elisabeth Saaditsch-Wolff is an Austrian woman who has been indicted for ‘hate speech' for speaking against Islam in her country. Elisabeth has lived in a number of Muslim countries and has experienced the intolerance and inequality of Sharia law first hand. "If you can't speak, you're silent and you're dead. I will dare to say what I think and it makes them uneasy."
The thorn in Iran's side - Israel
Lt. Colonel Allen West is a decorated war hero and Congressional Candidate in Florida's 22nd District. "There is no such thing as a war on terror. In World War II how smart would it have been if the US said they had declared war on the blitzkrieg, or on the kamikaze? A nation does not go to war against a tactic. A nation goes to war against an ideology. We are against something that is a totalitarian, theocratic, political ideology and it is called Islam. Trend analysis is what we called it--stop calling profiling. It's about identifying the enemy and what they're doing. The reality of your enemy must become your own."(CPAC, 2010)
Lieutenant Colonel Allen West (US Army, Retired) was born and raised in Atlanta Georgia and is third of four generations of military servicemen in his family. His parents instilled in him a very basic principle, love of God and Country. In 2004, when it was time to retire from more than twenty years of service in the US Army, he brought his wife and two young daughters to Broward County, Florida, where he taught high school for one year. He then returned to Afghanistan as an advisor to the Afghan army, an assignment he finished in November 2007.
"The Holy Koran tells us be conscious of god and always speak truth,"President Barack Obama stated in his 2009 United Nations speech during the same session Ahmedineijad said, "Satan is the ultimate evil. America is God's enemy!"(Atomic Jihad, 2010)
Today Israel is the thorn in Iran's side.
Ahmedinejad has repeatedly said he would annihilate the country
of Jews and much fear Israel will respond with
a preemptive attack on Iran.
Talk of globalization fades in the face of nuclear holocaust.
"This threat may sound straight out of Hollywood, but it is very real," according to CIA Director Porter Goss who
recently testified before Congress about nuclear material missing from storage sites in Russia." (Kyl, 2010)
In the meantime, diplomacy could be a very dangerous approach to Iran. Joel Gilbert is the writer/director of the documentary film, Atomic Jihad, and says Obama isn't the only President to have difficulty accepting that western values of freedom, democracy and secularism don't apply to other cultures and religions like Islam.
"In 1979 President Carter withdrew support from our ally, the Shah of Iran, and more recently the Bush administration did the same with our ally Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan. Both mistakenly believed the removal of these autocrats would result in the break out of western secular democracy...Since its Islamic Revolution in 1979 Iran has been the undisputed leader of Islamism striving for the revival of Muslim society from 300 years of decline. This means Islamic government over all Muslim lands, destruction to Israel, and eventual defeat of the West. In Islam worldly events on a political level are an affirmation of faith. Therefore, as a devout Muslim, Ahmadinejad must use all means to reaffirm God's covenant with the Believers. (His) speech at the U. N. last September was nothing less than a declaration of war against America."
(Highway 61 Entertainment, 2010)
But how could one rogue nation and rants of dictator defeat the U.S. military strength? In the same Washington Post article, Jon Kyl writes: "An electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the American Homeland, said one of the distinguished scientists who testified at the Senate Judiciary sub-committee, is one of only a few ways that the U.S. could be defeated by its enemies. And it is probably the easiest. A single Scud missile, carrying a single nuclear weapon, detonated at the appropriated altitude, would interact with the Earth's atmosphere...able to knock out already stressed power grids and other electrical systems across much or even all the continental United States, for months if not years. (Kyl, 2005)
The article continues to describe a spiral of slow deaths due to rotting food in warehouses, no gasoline (pumped by electricity), unsanitary water supply, raging unchecked fires, and increased need for transformers (which take a year to make outside of the U.S.). Sound outrageous? The 9/11 attack on New York City's Twin Towers would have sounded impossible on 9/10 as well. If history can reveal today's answer, Obama's approach of pursuing 'shared hopes and common dreams between America and Islam' won't work. Appeasement by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain before WWII has shown this approach to be not only naive but also misguided. Chamberlain met with Adolph Hitter several times believing as Obama--that talking would melt away differences and derail an ideological agenda.
Stop being afraid of this enemy
Millions of Jews killed in genocide are the proof. Less than forty minutes from Atlanta, Georgia is one of an estimated 30 operating Jihad camps in the U.S. They teach "Soldiers of Allah" to detonate explosives, murder guards and snipers all in the name of Allah. Their instruction comes from Mubarah Ali Gilani, the Sheikh that journalist Daniel Pearl was in route to interview before his capture and beheading in 2002. Jihadists are instructed "to act like you're a friend and then just kill him, like in the book."(Homegrown Jihad, 2009)
Today, globalization has no chance against a nuclear Iran less educators, media, government and citizens put political correctness aside and take a cold hard look at the reality we live in--the threat outside our borders and now within the United States of determined and focused Jihadists trusting their God for our annihilation.
Lt. Col. West exhorted a standing room only crowd in Washington in February, "Stop attacking Jews and Christians; stop being afraid of this enemy; show the same type of vehemence you show against your fellow American's against them because in thirty to forty year from now, if they're successful, and they have control
of this country, there will be no free media. There will be no freedom of speech. You will have been complicit you were too much of a coward to take a stand!"(CPAC, 2010)
