Shock As Russia Says They Will Now Pull Their Troops Out Of Syria

Putin’s latest announcement is “a symbolic gesture to sweeten the opposition’s pill, because Assad is clearly not going to go away even if Russia slightly reduces its operations,” said Anton Lavrov, an independent Russian military analyst. “This is clearly linked to the start of negotiations in Geneva. It’s a signal to the opposition and an attempt to influence their agreeability.”

Russia said it will start withdrawing forces from Syria in a surprise move that puts pressure on its ally President Bashar Al-Assad, as well as opposition groups, to reach a deal at the peace talks that got under way hours earlier in Geneva.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose military intervention last year in support of Assad turned the tide in Syria’s five-year civil war, said the partial pullout should begin on Tuesday. A Russian air base and a naval facility will continue to function, he said in Moscow. Assad didn’t request the withdrawal, said Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

Russia has urged the Syrian leader to be “constructive” in the latest peace talks, aimed at ending a conflict that’s killed a quarter-million people, sparked a refugee exodus to Europe and allowed Islamic State a foothold. For Putin, who’s worked with the U.S. to promote diplomacy in Syria even though the two powers backed opposite sides in the war, it’s an opportunity to display peacemaking credentials while preserving the gains Assad’s army made under Russian air cover.

“Putin is a wily guy. He is showing he’s a statesman,” said Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East studies at the University of Oklahoma. “Russia is also sending a message to Assad who has been sounding too confident.”

‘Effective Work’

Putin and President Barack Obama discussed the Russian plan to withdraw troops by phone on Monday, the White House said. Obama welcomed the reduction in violence since the U.S. and Russia helped broker a truce last month, but said that “continuing offensive actions by Syrian regime forces risk undermining” both that truce and the Geneva talks.

In ordering the pullback of the “main part” of Russia’s military from Syria, Putin said the armed forces’ “effective work” created the conditions for beginning the peace process. “I hope today’s decision will be a good signal to all the conflicting sides,” the Russian president said. Russia’s ruble pared losses after Putin’s announcement.

The Syrian presidency said on Twitter that Russia had promised to continue supporting Syria’s fight against terrorism.

The definition of who’s a terrorist in Syria, as well as Assad’s future role, has been at the root of the disagreement between Russia and the U.S., which says moderate rebels against the regime have also been targeted by Putin’s intervention. Russia says the opposition is dominated by jihadists. The current cease-fire allows operations against United Nations-designated terrorist groups to continue.

Salem al-Muslet, a spokesman for the main opposition group, the High Negotiations Committee, said Russia is largely to blame for the current state of the conflict.

‘Symbolic Gesture’

“The Russian departure will be good for the Syrian people and will weaken the Syrian regime,” he said by phone.

The U.S. has softened calls for Assad’s removal in recent months, while continuing to argue that a long-term settlement won’t be possible while he’s in office. In his phone call with Putin, Obama “underscored that a political transition is required to end the violence,” the White House said.

At talks in Geneva earlier on Monday, there were few signs that Assad or the opposition are willing to make major compromises.

Applying Pressure

The UN’s special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, called on the international community to apply “maximum pressure” on the two sides, after holding his first meeting with the government delegation on Monday. He’s due to have talks with the opposition on Tuesday.

Syria’s regime is indicating that it will only accept a limited role for the opposition in government, and that discussing Assad’s position is a “red line.”

Last week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov urged the Syrian leader as well as his opponents to demonstrate a “real willingness” to agree on a new constitution for Syria that would build a “future democratic society.”

Putin said that the Russian bombing campaign had allowed the Syrian army to “take the initiative on nearly all fronts.” His spokesman Peskov declined to comment on how many troops will remain, whether S-400 anti-aircraft defense missiles will be withdrawn and whether Russian airstrikes will end.

‘Minimal’ Force

Russia is likely to leave “minimal” forces in place, including some warplanes, to protect its naval facility in Tartus and the Khmeimim airbase, said Vladimir Komoedov, chairman of the State Duma lower house of parliament’s defense committee.

“Any war ends and guns go quiet,” said Komoedov, an ex-commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. “The time for politics has come, everyone has to be at the negotiating table.”

Still, Viktor Ozerov, head of the defense committee in the upper house of Russia’s parliament, said by phone that if the Syrian army isn’t capable of finishing off Islamic State, “we can come back.” source

    We do know where the Russian Bear will end up in the last days. He has his foot in the door. Putin is up to something as always. He has his own agenda. Now we wait to see what it is….

    • Pete

      “We” don’t “know” anything. It isn’t given to us to know. All this proves is that the self-proclaimed prophecy watchers are a bunch of frauds who rely on hype and twisting of scripture to get attention, and it’s hilarious to watch them scramble to explain what this means. They have effectively blown all of their credibility since they claimed that Putin’s actions are a direct fulfillment of Ezekiel 38/39 and now they can’t figure out what’s going on. Of course, none of them will repent of their deeds nor will they admit they were wrong. They will just take a breather and come back with the next round of garbage.

        Looks like Gerry isn’t going to respond to you, wonder why ?

        It makes me sad to read comments like this. This is some of the most hateful, condemning vitriol I’ve ever seen directed toward the brethren.

        Do we know the hour of His return? Of course not. But Jesus teaches us, in His own words, to “Watch!” He teaches us to be aware of the signs that indicate the season of His return. And we are to warn people of what’s coming!

        Will watchmen make mistakes? Of course they will. We don’t have the whole picture. But at least they’re doing their job; that is, warning people.

        There’s enough division in the Body as is. I don’t know what it is about this website but so many Christians here seem to forget Who they’re supposed to be representing. They attack each other with hateful rhetoric and stir up strife creating an atmosphere of “us vs. them.” It’s shameful to watch.

        I urge you to apologize and repent. Remember Who you serve.

        • Pete

          I am sorry your feelings are hurt, but I will tell you what I am sick of. I am sick of Christians thinking they know the future, and constantly predicting the end and making fools out of all of us. And I am sick of Christians preaching a false gospel that warns the lost they had better get saved to avoid some 7 year tribulation that is 100% absolutely sure to come, any day now. Then it never comes and the Gospel loses even more credibility.

          NO, Jesus did NOT tell us to watch the news and make predictions. He never told us to watch the sky for eclipses. He never said that earthquakes would “increase” or that times would get tougher. He distinctly warned AGAINST speculating in fact.

          Nowadays speculating is a cottage industry. People need to wake up and stop listening to these shenanigans.

          • Larry / vietnamvet1971

            You seem very upset that people are talking about the Rapture, anger will not make some one stop looking & waiting for our LORD maybe you should be Looking up every once in a while. We can know when it is NEAR & YES Jesus told us the Birth Pangs and events that signal the End Times. I will not hide my head in the sand and act like nothing is going to happen.

            Don’t you think you may be Speculating yourself that we are WRONG and you are RIGHT.

          • DC

            3Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

            8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

          • DC

            re: earthquakes see Matthew 24:7

            7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

          • carson

            did you ever read the bible? just one verse out of many shows your wrong as far as both the Lord giving signs and us looking towards His return, matthew 24:33.
            And go back to the beginning of matthew 24, the disciples asked about the signs of His return, and He didn’t sternly rebuke them did He? No, instead He SHOWED THEM THE MANY THINGS AND SIGNS!
            wake up wake up save yourself in Christ your way off the mark thinking we’re not to know the signs and prophecy as with all the word.

            and nobody who reads the bible said that today’s events with russia/syria are the fulfillment of ezek 38, but a lining up of some things for later, and why does it point to the future and not today? Because a couple things are missing today, one is ezek 38:8-11..israel is dwelling safely in the day magog comes=that is not like today. Also ethiopia and libya (or ancient areas) are not active today in a fledgling magog coalition, so some things yet to come.

            sure there are plenty that go to far and say this is that and it’s today and they shouldn’t but what has that to do with the truth, everything written will be fulfilled in God’s timing.

            Not only are we to read all the word including prophecy but keep it/heed it/apply it, Rev 1:3

    • Randi

      I believe Putin’s next plan is nukes.

      • Corey Zimits

        Bingo. That is exactly why the Russians are getting out of the way.

  • Trober

    Real reason Putin is pulling out: cheap oil bankrupted his ambitions. And, he’s not ballsy enough to just go take the oil.

    • KY

      I agree Trober. Putin made Obama look like a fool… again! I can only wonder how Saudi Arabia and Turkey feel about these peace talks. They want Assad gone so he cannot be used by Iran any longer.

      • Jelly

        The jews want Assad gone. If they want him gone, then Zionist controlled America wants him gone. Hail Netanyahu!

        • KY

          I’m sure the Jews want him gone, but not at the price of having the US financed ISIS in his place. Putin did everyone a favor by stopping the terror reign of ISIS in Syria.

    • Pete

      Trober what “oil” does Putin want?

      • Trober

        Petroleum. The means for Putin to finance himself.

        The lower oil prices were a war v. Putin to defund his Syrian support. It worked.

        • Pete

          Putin has a crapload of his own oil, he doesn’t need the thimble-full of oil Israel has today.

    • COoleemeeedd

      I think that Putin is pulling a slick one. The “Nuke” theory makes sense to me. He’s threatened that before. This is all part of the plan that leads up to the Gog-Magog war. I thought that we’d see Israel’s neighbors hit them one more time before this big one starts, though. I believe that this is just a slight pause in the big picture. These warnings give us more time to encourage our Brothers and Sisters in the faith, to evangelize and to “make disciples of all nations.” So let’s keep the faith and do that, and wait patiently for God’s plan to unfold. I’m not a date-setter, but we are certainly coming closer. I thought it was interesting that the Israelis are going to put 24/7 video cameras on the Temple Mount and have them broadcast on the Internet. That would make it possible for the world to see the “Two Witnesses” when they come to town!

  • CAH

    He is also controlled by the NWO, like all (most) other leaders. There actions are all eye-blind. If they follow the agenda to openly it will become more obvious, therefore they pretend to be opposing the EU and US and even the UN. Don’t trust them either….

  • CAH

    Their actions pardon the typo

    “Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I {am} against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
    And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: {leave…: or, strike thee with six plagues: or, draw thee back with an hook of six teeth} {the north…: Heb. the sides of the north}
    And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
    Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that {is} with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and {to} the beasts of the field to be devoured. {sort: Heb. wing} {to be…: Heb. to devour}
    Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken {it}, saith the Lord GOD. {the open…: Heb. the face of the field}
    And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I {am} the LORD. {carelessly: or, confidently}
    So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not {let them} pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I {am} the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
    Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this {is} the day whereof I have spoken.
    And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: {handstaves: or, javelins} {burn them…: or, make a fire of them}
    So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down {any} out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
    And it shall come to pass in that day, {that} I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the {noses} of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call {it} The valley of Hamongog. {noses: or, mouths} {Hamongog: that is, The multitude of Gog}
    And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
    Yea, all the people of the land shall bury {them}; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
    And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. {men…: Heb. men of continuance}
    And the passengers {that} pass through the land, when {any} seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog. {set up: Heb. build}
    And also the name of the city {shall be} Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land. {Hamonah: that is, The multitude}
    And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, {even} a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. {unto…: Heb. to the fowl of every wing} {my sacrifice: or, my slaughter}
    Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. {goats: Heb. great goats}
    And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
    Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
    And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
    So the house of Israel shall know that I {am} the LORD their God from that day and forward.
    And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
    According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
    Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
    After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made {them} afraid.
    When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
    Then shall they know that I {am} the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. {which…: Heb. by my causing of them, etc}
    Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.”
    Ezequiel 39:1-29

    They have no doubt accomplished what they set out to do.

    • carollyn

      GRACE – I think you are exactly right. I’m afraid whole groups of people and villages were obliterated. Russian actions of what exactly happened are vastly under-reported by the libby media. It is my understanding that one village is no more because of the shoot-down of a Russian jet in Turkish airspace.

  • MG

    Well, I guess they finished what they started…Shock??? Guess Putin is done. What would people think if we (USA) left the middle east completely? Now THAT would be shocking!!!

  • Larry / vietnamvet1971

    I am sure obama the weakling has mortgaged the farm to give Putin what he wants and ask for that is the way obama operates give, give, give and hope Putin will be a good boy until he leaves his white mosque. GOOD RIDDANCE to that Evil Muslim.

  • Daniel Eschmann

    Did the “BLACK POPE” have anything to do with that? As did he did with Barack Obama.

  • JOse Manuel torres

    Merely a strategic move by Putin… He will not leave Syria – this is only a partial withdrawal until the peace talks fail…

  • John Colavito

    I think it’s all part of the plan. It’s called tactical retreat.

  • Kiwiwatcher

    Believe the withdrawal to be related to cost effectiveness – there is a significant toll on having military stationed on foreign soil. But yes, the misguided Ezekiel 38/39 exponents will have to dream up another scenario to satisfy themselves they can read the Scriptures correctly.

    Putin has successfully thwarted the NWO dream of a gas/oil pipeline from Saudi/Qatar, across Syria/Turkey, into Europe with cheap energy, and thereby reducing the European reliance on Russian fuel supplies.

    The power vacuum will be have US/NWO rubbing their hands with glee – to continue with their aim of partitioning Syria into three or four provinces.
    Yesterday, Division 13, (a ‘moderate’ free Syria army supplied by US) was crying out that their munitions dump had been ‘raided’ by isis or alnursa front. Obama is back to his usual habit of supplying ‘moderates’ who pass the military supplies onto isis.

  • Edwitness

    How about this? Putin is leaving because otherwise God could not put hooks in his jaw and draw him back and leave but a sixth part of thee. Ez.38:4 & 39:2. Sorry Pete, but God told us these things before so that we would know the signs of His return. As Jan Markel says; “Things are not falling apart, they’re falling together.” Just as the scripture says.

    • KY

      Jan Markel is one of my favorites.

    • Pete

      Edwitness, the person Ezekiel prophesied “against” (Eze 38:2) was called “Gog” of Magog, not Putin. I’m not sure how anyone can explain just why God would tell His prophet to go prophecy to Gog when that man was actually Putin, who wouldn’t exist for another 2500 years.

      We don’t know any “signs” of the return of Jesus, there are not any. Jesus will return when He is ready, and He isn’t giving us any hints.

      Jan Markel has been 100% wrong so far in everything she has predicted, just like all of the rest of the fools who subscribe to newspaper eschatology. Don’t be one of them.

      • Edwitness

        Because it has a future fulfillment.

        • Pete

          With all due respect, Ed, that isn’t an answer. You are simply repeating the claim. God said to Ezekiel: GO prophecy TO Gog. What was Ezekiel supposed to do? Tell God “No way man. That’s far future.” Or “Who the heck is Gog?”

          A far-future prophecy makes 0% sense. You have been bamboozled by these charlatans. You can’t even explain this.

          • Edwitness

            This prophecy is tied to the return of the nation Israel. That happened in May of 1948. That is why it is future from the time of Ezekiel’s prophecy. Isn’t the fact that it is speaking of a future event the reason we call it prophecy?

  • Kiwiwatcher

    Good and exciting news today brother David K. The Kurds are to announce their homeland as Northern Syria. Assad will not be amused, Russia wont mind, Erdogan will need the meds as his worst nightmare appears on his doorstep, US and Israel will be delighted as their 2008 plans to partition Syria are coming to fruition. Although both parties had been attempting to carve up Syria using different groups/method – Russia nearly halted their plans but God has always been in control. Israel has wanted a buffer state of divisive peoples between itself and Iran…..also a partitioned Syria allows the Golan to quietly be slip into the Jewish fold.
    New World Order leader Henry Kissenger met with Putin with the latest update on 3 Feb 2016. Putin was informed that he would be elevated further up the NWO rankings if he adopted the ‘cunning’ plan in return for treats or in the old language – tributes. Two days later Putin announced a cessation of hostilies would occur on 1 March. Although John Kerry and others got their knickers in a knot, saying that peace would not come and Plan B would be required – Gods hand has been on the whole process. Kerry/Obama have been very miffed that they have not ‘created’ the solution. Has been very interesting observing White House spokesman Toner attempt to rewrite history by turning the dialogue 180 degrees, by saying “Russia has agreed with us… do whatever”…….when the reality has been, Russia has forced the US to accept ‘this how its going to happen.’

    Putin was promised sanctions would be lifted from Russia in the middle of this year if he was interested, and an positive agreement on the Crimean issue also. Putin appears to like the options and by the middle of the year he will be modelling himself as a possible Nobel Peace prize recepient, singing with gusto in church choirs, and helping old ladies across the street. EU will look over at the well behaving bear fluttering its eyelids and lift the economic sanctions.

    Regardless, its God plan that is unfolding so I am very excited, as this exactly what I had assumed would happen….most of which I have posted on NTEB, including an article or two on the Kurds about four/five months ago on this site, the header being something on G20 meeting in Turkey. (Working on little screen device brother David as computer with files needs another 24hrs parts upgrade). Sister Heather, who sometimes follows, may also feel it too.

    Currently we are in Daniel 7 with the four beasts….which is the Middle East Quartet – the US, Russia, EU and UN. In my KJV (1967) brother David….it says ‘God of fortresses’ rather than ‘God of forces.’ Regardless, going out on a limb here, but imagine that ‘God of forces’ is the US…..due to biggest military machine….who now build up the Kurds with arms to create as Kissenger believes, ‘a balance of power.’ something to keep in mind brother, but what a great day. Bless you.

    • DC

      Thanks for taking the time to post that. I haven’t seen any headlines re: the Kurds.
