On January 20, 1996 Palestinian Arabs elected an 88-member legislative council and a president of the Palestinian Authority. The date of the elections was more than 18 months later than planned, a delay used by Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leader Yaser Arafat to consolidate his grip on the Palestinian populace and silence opposition.

Any independent news sources were intimidated into silence and opposing political organizations quietly disappeared. Arafat manipulated the election with rules to forbid anyone from running against him without his express approval, as reported by the UN election observer team. Dr. Haider Abdul Shefi, who had led the PLO delegation at the Madrid negotiations in 1991, offered his candidacy, only to be rejected by Arafat. When Dr. Shefi said that he was going to run anyway, a bomb explosion in Dr. Shefi's home convinced him otherwise.
When the votes were counted, Arafat became the Palestinian Authority's first president, winning 88.1 percent of the vote; his main opponent, Samiha Yusuf Khalil, garnered 9.3 percent. The legislative contests, held in 16 districts of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, saw 50 of the 88 seats go to members of the Arafat's Fatah political movement and most of the rest go to parties who were reliably loyal to Arafat. International monitors noted a number of irregularities, but praised the high turnout and the efficient manner in which the elections were conducted. However, investigations have since documented the methods Arafat used to impose dictatorial rule and ensure his landslide victory.
Final status agreements between Israel and the PA have been delayed because the PA's commitment to Israel's security, embodied in a series of signed documents, has been only an illusion created to gain concessions. The years of the "Oslo Peace Process" have been filled with escalating violence and terrorism against Israel to the point where the time is known in Israel as the "Oslo War". While the Constitution of Iran entrusts the military with guarding Iran's territorial integrity and political independence, it gives the Revolutionary Guard [Pasdaran] the responsibility of guarding the Revolution itself.

Established under a decree issued by Khomeini on May 5, 1979, the Pasdaran was intended to guard the Revolution and to assist the ruling clerics in the day-to-day enforcement of the government's Islamic codes and morality.
The Revolution also needed to rely on a force of its own rather than borrowing the previous regime's tainted units. By 1986, the Pasdaran consisted of 350,000 personnel organized in battalion-size units that operated either independently or with units of the regular armed forces.
In 1986 the Pasdaran acquired small naval and air elements. By 1996 the ground and naval forces were reported to number 100,000 and 20,000, respectively.

Iran conducts large military exercise near Iraq border
TEHERAN -- Iran's army has finished a large military exercise by ground forces near the Iraqi border, the official Iranian state news agency IRNA reported Monday. But unlike previous war games in which Iran boasted of weapons advances, the latest maneuvers were largely held under wraps. The report by the IRNA news agency was the first public word that the maneuvers had been held, and even IRNA's confirmation came only indirectly. The report was about the death of two military officers in a road accident as they came back from "large" exercises by ground forces.
Iran has been holding regular exercises by the various branches of its military and its elite Revolutionary Guard, considered the strongest fighting force in the country. Usually, Iran's state media give them extensive coverage of military exercises to tout the country's strength in the standoff with the United States and its allies over Iran's disputed nuclear program. In November, air defense exercises were meant to showcase Iran's capabilities in defending its nuclear facilities from possible attack.

Al Qaeda Promises U.S. Death By A 'Thousand Cuts'
Printer bombs planted on two cargo flights last month cost only a few thousand dollars and were intended to affect the American economy, according to a newly published Al Qaeda-affiliated magazine. The attempt was called "Operation Hemorrhage," boasted the magazine, and the entire plot cost al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, only $4,200.
Yesterday, a special edition of Inspire magazine -- an English-language propaganda publication produced by AQAP -- gave a detailed description of how the attempted attack was conceived and produced. "Two Nokia mobiles, $150 each, two HP printers, $300 each, plus shipping, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses add up to a total bill of $4,200," one article said. "That is all that Operation Hemorrhage cost us. In terms of time, it took us three months to plan and execute the operation from beginning to end." Iran Plans To Load Fuel Into Bushehr Nuclear Reactor

Iran is set to move a step closer to the start-up of its first nuclear power plant on Tuesday as it is planning to load fuel into the core of the Bushehr reactor, a senior lawmaker said Monday. According to Iranian officials the Russian-built nuclear plant will start producing energy as early as 2011 after years of delays.

Call to Destroy Israel by Any Means - in Washington, DC
"American professor Kaukab Siddique recently called for Israel to be destroyed by any means necessary, and issued a warning to Jews as well. Iranian nuclear power plants attacked by Stuxnet computer worm
TEHRAN, Iran - A complex computer worm capable of seizing control of industrial plants has affected the personal computers of staff working at Iran's first nuclear power station weeks before the facility is to go online, the official news agency reported Sunday. The project manager at the Bushehr nuclear plant, Mahmoud Jafari, said a team is trying to remove the malware from several affected computers, though it "has not caused any damage to major systems of the plant," the IRNA news agency reported.
It was the first sign that the malicious computer code, dubbed Stuxnet, which has spread to many industries in Iran, has also affected equipment linked to the country's nuclear program, which is at the core of the dispute between Tehran and Western powers like the United States. Experts in Germany discovered the worm in July, and it has since shown up in a number of attacks - primarily in Iran, Indonesia, India and the U.S. The malware is capable of taking over systems that control the inner workings of industrial plants. In the United States, respected commentators this week talked and wrote openly about a possible war over Iran's progress toward a nuclear bomb capability. Former US ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, who has excellent connections in Washington and Jerusalem, wrote: "The United States is more likely than Israel to launch an attack on Iran." Lawrence Eagleburger, former US Secretary of State, had this to say about the activation of Iran's first reactor at Bushehr Saturday, Aug. 21: "The world's going to war over this. Al-Qaida Prepares For Israel-Iran War
War, and rumors of war. Al-Qaida is ready to exploit a war "by the Jews against Iran," the Sunni group's second-in-command in Yemen, Saeed al-Shehri, said in an audio message this month, according to the Daily Beast. The mostly Shi'ite nation of Iran is an enemy to Al-Qaida, and al-Shehri predicted that after Israel attacked Iranian nuclear installations, Iran would blame Saudi Arabia - which reports say may let Israel fly through its airspace to attack Iran - and use the opportunity to seize the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Al-Shehri said Israel would then seize territory from surrounding Arab nations to establish "the greater state of Israel," and the Sunni Arab population of the Middle East would be trapped between the "Jews in the Middle East and Iran in the Peninsula," the Daily Beast reported.
