Carter Conlon’s ‘Run!’ Sermon Is A Much-Needed Message For The Body Of Christ In These Last Days

My mind is forever branded with the stories that I heard of police officers from the city of New York. As people were fleeing from a crumbling building there were police officers and firemen and others that were running towards the buildings saying “Run for your life,” at their own peril. And in some cases I believe they knew they were going to die but there was a sense of duty. I was crying out to God, I said “God, oh Jesus, don’t let my sense of duty be less for Your Kingdom than these beloved firemen and policemen were for those that are perishing in a falling tower. We’re living in a generation when Truth is falling into the streets. I want to be among those that are not running away from the conflict but running into the conflict and saying, “Run for your life.”

On the first Sunday following the tragedy of September 11th, 2001, Carter Conlon delivered this soul-stirring message at Times Square Church in Manhattan.

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (KJV)

On the Sunday after the attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11, as America was still in absolute shock over what had taken place, the Times Square Church in New York City held services as they usually did. But the message that was preached was anything but usual.

Pastor Carter Conlon preached a sermon that reached down to the innermost depths of our Christian experience, and challenged us to ‘run!’ from pretend Christianity and simply playing church twice a week. This is what he preached that Sunday morning, and it is our hope and prayer that it will inspire you to a closer, more active walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon: Run For Your Life – Preacher: Carter Conlon

On the first Sunday following the tragedy of September 11th, 2001, Carter Conlon delivered this soul-stirring message at Times Square Church in Manhattan. The sermon was titled, Run For Your Life and it is certainly worth the effort to listen to it in its entirety:

Listen to me like you’ve never listened to me ever in your life.

We have got to lay our lives down for the purposes of God. This is not a Sunday School picnic, the church of Jesus Christ. This is not an invitation to have continuous good times. This is a war for the souls of men.

Come out from among them. Run for your life. Because this is about your life. This is not just about an opposing theology or conflicting viewpoint on Jesus, this is about your life.

Run from gospels that focus only on success and prosperity. Run!

Run from those who use the name of Christ only for personal gain. Run from those that are picking your pocket in the name of Jesus. Run!

Run from gospels that only focus on self improvement. Run!

Run from churches where men and not Christ are glorified. Run!

Run Body of Christ, Run! Get out! Don’t touch the unclean thing.

Run from churches in America and Canada where there is no Bible. There’s no cross in the theology. There’s no soul-searching word. There’s no repentance from sin. There’s no mention of the blood of Jesus. Run! It’s unclean. Run!

Run from churches where you’re comfortable in your sins. If you come into the house of God and you’ve got sin in your life and you’re not convicted of it, you’re at a table of devils.

Run from pulpits that are filled with political men, who are using the pulpit of God for a personal political agenda. Run!

Run from those who preach division between races and cultures. Run!

Run! Get out! Turn it off! Get away from it!

They know nothing of God.

Run from ungodly spasmodic movements and aimless empty prophesying. Beloved Church, run for your life!

Run from preachers that stand and tell stories and jokes. Run like you’ve never run before!

RUN!

RUN!

RUN!

  • Today we are seeing more people running into the darkness than people running out of it. We must remain vigilant in letting the light of Christ shine through us until we are called home.

  • Patrice

I remember that sermon. Found it on 828ministries.com and was so impacted by the desperate plea to all who are in ‘churches’ who placate the itching ears of members. My heart breaks for my sons who were raised in the church and married non-believing women and they and their children are all agnostics and going to hell. My heart is broken but not giving up on making my pleas to the Lord…he hears and my prayers will not come back void.

    • guest

Patrice, could I recommend a book for your grandkids? If they’re old enough to declare themselves as agnostic, this book may sway them in the right direction back to God. It’s called “Truth Matters” by Andreas Kostenberger, Darrell Bock, and Josh Chatraw. It’s targeted at teenagers but it’s full of great, engaging information for anyone curious about whether God exists or not and why Jesus is God. It’s a small book but it’s tight, engaging, humorous, and gives great arguments to counter agnostics such as Bart Ehrman.

If nothing else, read it for yourself. What you learn may help you to reach your kids and grandkids!

    • DC

Father, please give Patrice’s children and grandchildren a shaking that will lead them to You. Separate them from worldly influences and show them the Truth of over 300 prophecies fulfilled in your birth, death, and resurrection. May Your Holy Spirit draw them to You and give them the Peace this world can never give. Save them, Lord. Bless Patrice and hear her mother’s desperate prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

      • Ron

Amen DC, Amen! God Bless You and Patrice!

    • Ish

Fear not…the Lord is mighty to save. Trust in Him..He will draw your children right into His arms. For he that believeth in me shall be saved, and thy house. AMEN

    • Mary BaYnes

You could have written this about my same Family!
I do Pray for them and my lost Friends! HE knows
      the Desire of my Heart!

The overall body of Christ is in the great falling away or apostasy. We are seeing the Word of God manifested before our very ideas. The Lord Jesus said: ” Will I find Faith when I come back”.

We must keep the Faith at all costs. Sometimes it is nigh impossible but with God’s grace all things are possible.

    Maranatha, Lord Jesus, Maranatha.

Brothers and sister, speaking of false teachers, look at this heresy I came across on Sid Roth

    https://youtu.be/AgMpGmdl_4w

How can people believe this nonsence? 🙁

    • Paulette

Leigh, thanks for sharing. This Kemp guy says that this … MAN … will cause break through , that is the first key and sign. MAN … not God. It does not come thru man. All things come thru the Father. It is shame that so many are out their deceiving people to make money. He says he was told by the holy spirit. Maybe it wasn’t the holy spirit that was telling him.

      • leigh

I doubt any of this from the Lord. It’s like a said in the comment section, we have brothers and sisters in the persecuted world dying to for their faith in Jesus, don’t they deserve to have this ‘new revelation’ on how to receive Gods blessing! But no, God chooses a man in America, where most Christians are richer than billions of people around the world, to reveal this vital information to, so he can come back and tell us how to have all our prayers for health, wealth and prosperity answered!! What a joke! And the audience sit there and nod their heads in agreement! Greedy for what ever else they can get from the Lord!

    • Sid Roth is a QUACK, more New Age than New Testament.

      • leigh

Oh absolutely … he is a sensationalist! Always out to sell the next big thing!

  • leigh

Absolutely beautiful sermon. God bless you Geoffrey!

    • So glad it blessed you! 🙂 It’s one of my all-time favorites.

  • catherine

    Amen. Run!

  • Zoey

I live in New York and that’s my Pastor. I reside in the borough of Queens and drive to Manhattan in traffic just to hear truth. people always ask me why do I go so far to church where there are plenty of churches in Queens. I tell them that’s what they did when John the Baptist was preaching, truth was so scarced that they had to travel long distance just to hear a man who ate honey and locust in the wilderness because truth was not being preached by the priest. I thank God for Pastor Carter Conlon always, no matter what season were in, he always preach about the coming persecution of the church to prepare the church and the darkness of this age.

  • Joanna

    Amen! Run!

There’s so many apostate churches out there and people coming into the churches with messages of false doctrines and these churches preach a false Gospel, and they try to make God fit in with their new morality, and leave out Scriptures which go against their agenda…the church are dividing in two, the false apostate church that loves the World and the True church that loves our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Read the Holy Bible, know the Truth in your hearts and soul, pray, preach the Gospel, be true to the Word of God…be Faithful to Him…
Be True Believers and be Righteous, when persecution comes, do not be discouraged, hold Firm to Jesus Christ.
The true Church needs to pray for each other, to encourage each other and hold together.
Persecution is coming and the church needs to prepare for what is to come.
    God Bless you

  • AmAnda

Wow. Thank you for posting. It’s amazing how your recent posts have been about false teachers and the lukewarm church.
I have recently left my church -God woke me up!
For months I knew something was wrong but I was blinded by all the pomp. It was so that on resurrection Sunday our speaker who is head teaching minister preached a lacklustre sermon- all about Jesus but not really about Jesus. No call to repentance,no thankfulness,no praise and no reverence.
And to top it all he quoted Mohandas Ghandi to give people assurance that ISIS won’t win.
I was shaking I was so angry. Needless to say I confronted all in an email and gave scriptures to support my concern.
Of course he was spitting mad and I got told this church has always been this way.And he was right! I knew I must just go!Run!
I really do believe God is calling out his true church- out of all the so called churches.
Jesus said his sheep know His voice.
I really appreciated the post- confirmation again and again for me. I have no Christian friends who support me so I feel rather alone and sometimes doubt if I am right. But this was good.
    I’m gonna Run!

Hi AmAnda! You are correct! My husband and I left our church recently for the same reasons. Seemed like they were overly concerned with being politically correct and cool to attract the millennials with no call for repentance. The music was way too loud, and this is coming from a former 80’s headbanger! I also suspect they were using auto-tune for the singers to sound like perfect American idol contestants! They were using Rick Warren material for their main women’s bible study. My husband and I discovered we were both disgusted and thinking the same things, so we found a smaller Bible based church. So glad the Holy Spirit called us out of there!

    • leigh

I feel the same sister, I feel like most of my family are blinded by these prosperity teachers and when I try say otherwise they don’t seem to want to hear it! Its a lonely place, but my husband and mom are awake to it too, thank the Lord! I cant wait for Jesus to come fetch us!

Wow. These words are relevant now than they were 15 years ago.

    1 Timothy 4:1-2
    Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

    Matthew 24:24
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

I used to be impressed when I saw churches with packed parking lots. I used to think, “they must be doing something right”, until I visited a couple. The excitement I had as I walked in the door turned sour after the service started every time. I was so disappointed. They were all so shallow and worldly on some level. In some of those places, I wanted to get up and walk out. I probably should have. If they had been as bad as some of the services I’ve seen in videos lately, I definitely would have. It’s really sad that so many churches have become so empty. Full of people, but so empty.

  • Louie Ferrer

Pastor Conlon, is right on track. He is filled with the holy spirit, and wants all of us, to be on fire for the Lord, in these last days.Stop, all this hatred, and fighting among the breatheren, to gain of what? All this here on earth, will be left behind, and burn in the firey fervent heat, that is soon to come. Repent now, while there is still time, and run, run, from all churches, that just tickle the ears.Again, repent and truly, seek him. Our redeemer lives.
