Full-blown war about to break out
Gaza terrorists continued to fire rockets into southern Israel on Thursday morning killing three people and injuring two others in Kiryat Malachi. More than 200 rockets have been fired from Gaza into the South in the 24 hours after the IDF launched a campaign Wednesday to root out the terror infrastructure in the coastal territory, beginning with the targeted killing of Ahmed Jabari, the chief of Hamas’s military wing.
Three people were pronounced dead on the scene and two others were suffering moderate injuries, including a baby.
A house in Ashdod and a school in Ofakim near Beersheba also sustained damage from rockets on Thursday morning.
Rockets also landed in the Eshkol Regional Council area, Gan Yavne and Ashkelon.
The IDF Spokesman’s Office stated the Iron Dome rocket defense system has successfully intercepted more than 80 rockets since the operation began.
separate IDF spokesman confirmed that all Palestinian terror factions took part in rocket fire overnight Wednesday, with Hamas trying to take the lead.
He added that the IDF “believes the rocket fire will intensify.”
Since beginning its operation, the IDF has struck nearly 200 Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza, including several terrorist cells preparing to fire rockets at Israel and medium-range rocket launchers located across the Strip.
Tank fire also was directed at terror targets, he added.
Palestinian sources said that 13 people were killed in Gaza as a result of the IAF strikes, with more than a hundred suffering injuries.
The spokesman concluded by describing the Hamas-ruled Strip as “a forward Iranian base,” and urged the populace to remain steadfast, as “home front resilience is vital for the continuing operation.”
Schools within 40 km. of the Gaza Strip were declared closed Thursday, and residents were urged to follow directives from the IDF Home Front Command. Magen David Adom paramedics treated 13 Israelis for injuries suffered overnight prior to the fatal strike in Kiryat Malachi, the organization said. Of the injured, four suffered light wounds while nine more suffered shock symptoms.
Gaza-border communities were in lockdown, with residents ordered to remain in their homes if they live within 7 km. of Gaza.
Explosions have been reported as far away as Dimona, some 75 km. from the Gaza Strip.
At an emergency meeting in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, the security cabinet authorized Defense Minister Ehud Barak to mobilize reservists if needed.
The cabinet also agreed that the IDF should continue to act against terrorist infrastructure and activity in Gaza. It instructed the Foreign Ministry to begin a diplomatic public relations campaign to explain that Israel was acting in self-defense against military targets, as the continued rocket barrage had become intolerable.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke on the telephone on Wednesday night with US President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. He was also scheduled to speak with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The prime minister thanked Obama and Biden for taking the position that Israel had a right to defend itself. The military operation immediately increased tensions with Egypt, which condemned Israel’s actions and recalled its ambassador. source – JPost
Muslim Brotherhood behind rocket attack
After a short break Saturday morning from shooting more than 80 missiles against a dozen southern Israeli towns and villages Friday night and early Saturday, March 9-10, the Palestinian Jihad Islami resumed firing on Beersheba and the Eshkol region. They also released a video clip showing them firing Grad multiple rocket launchers mounted on vehicles on Israeli civilian targets.
DEBKAfile: This was solid evidence that the Iranian-backed Jihad had put into service weapons smuggled in from Libya five months ago, as DEBKAfile was first to report November 11, 2011: Fifty Libyan Muslim Brotherhood mercenaries arrived in the Gaza Strip from Tripoli last month at the wheels of minivans on which were mounted the new Grad multiple rocket-launchers last seen on the Libyan battlefield in use against Muammar Qaddafi’s army.
Western intelligence agents operating in the Gaza Strip who tried at the time to find out from the Libyan Islamist rebels who was behind the smuggling operation were blocked by a dense wall of Palestinian Jihad Islamic operatives.
Since then, the Libyans have been training the Palestinian teams in the use of the multiple rocket systems – undisturbed by any Israeli military interference. source – DEBKA
Israel under attack
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:4
From IDF: An overall total of 30 rockets fired just today from the Gaza Strip struck major population centers in southern Israel. More than 500,000 Israelis are forced to stay in bomb shelters.
Terrorists are firing Qassam rockets, Grad missiles and mortar shells into the cities of Ashdod, Be’ersheba, Yavne, Netivot and Ashkelon; as well as into the Eshkol Regional Council.
- 17:30 - IAF aircraft targeted two members of the Popular Resistance Committee terror organization in the Gaza Strip – a senior operative, Zuhir Mussah Ahmed Kaisi, and a collaborator, Mahmud Ahmed Mahmud Hananni. The squad had been responsible for planning a combined terror attack that was to take place via Sinai in the coming days. A direct hit was confirmed.
- 20:00 - Earlier today, IAF aircraft thwarted two terrorist squads from firing rockets at Israel from the northern and the central Gaza Strip. Direct hits were identified.
- 22:20 - The Iron Dome System has intercepted so far one of three rockets aimed at Ashdod and four of four rockets aimed at Be’ersheba–two cities with a population of more than 200,000 each.
- 23:00 - Four people were injured today; two severely, one moderately, and another lightly.
Over the course of 2011, more than 600 rockets launched from the Gaza Strip struck southern Israel. One million Israelis are sleeping tonight under the threat of rocket fire from Hamas.
- The IDF does not seek an escalation in the region. However, the IDF is prepared to defend the residents of Israel and will respond with strength and determination against any attempt to execute terrorist attacks.
- Hamas uses other terror organizations to carry out terror attacks against the State of Israel and will bear the consequences of these actions in any future operation embarked upon by the IDF in order to eliminate the terror threat and restore the relative calm to the area. source – IDF
Boldness begets boldness
Iranian warships crossed through the Suez Canal for the first time since 1979 and docked at Syria’s Latakia port late Wednesday. The move has been called a “provocation” by Israeli President Shimon Peres, but is not seen as an immediate military threat to Israel. The ships met no interference by the United States or Israel, but Israeli officials have said that they are closely monitoring the situation.
According to the commander of the Iranian navy, Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the ships are merely ”carrying a message of peace to the nations of the world,” but the bold move has inspired quite the opposite by emboldening Hamas to fire upon Israel. The unrest in the Middle East has brought with it a great deal of opportunity for Hamas to gain more weaponry, and build confidence for a fresh round of attacks on Israel.
Israel’s security leaders ought not to have been surprised when Hamas fired two long-range Iranian-made Grad missiles Wednesday night, Feb. 23 at the Negev cities of Beersheba and Netivot. The attack occurred exactly when Iranian Navy commander Adm. Habibollah Sayyari was due in Syria’s Latakia port to attend the welcoming party for the two Iranian warships which made it through the Suez Canal without US or Israeli interference. It also marked a fresh, redoubled Hamas offensive against Israel.
Western military sources report that the Iran-backed Palestinian Hamas is further exploiting the shaky situation in Cairo and Israeli inaction to double or even triple the quantities of weapons smuggled via the Suez Canal and Sinai into the Gaza Strip. One Israeli officer said he had never before seen surface-to-surface missiles, anti-aircraft missiles and anti-tank missiles secreted into Gaza in such bulk.
The confidence factor
The free passage afforded the two Iranian warships for transiting the Suez Canal Tuesday, Feb. 22 – without Egypt or US and Israeli warships even inspecting their cargoes – has encouraged Tehran to press on with its expansionist ambitions. Hamas understood that its redoubled offensive against Israel would be most welcome. The Palestinian extremists held their fire until Tehran announced the warships had put into Latakia Wednesday and the arrival of Iran’s navy chief that night. And then they went into action – first against an IDF border patrol, then to fire Grads at Beersheba and Netivot.
